IMO, what a great way to recapitalized (take the money and run) and now being disgraced and out of public view (Now you get to hang with the real investors and forget the flock or fleeced). Depending on the structure of the scam you can roll over the property into shopping malls or default on mortgages and walk away. Ain't America great.

The scam is calling those political lecture halls and concert venues RELIGIOUS.
Harper's ran a series of articles on the scam. Apparently, the main things missing at the local megachurch are the usual trappings of Christianity: the big cross (plain or occupied), an altar front and center, and the usual array of linens, art and flowers, all with Christian ornamentation.
The tax exemption was meant to apply to the neighborhood church, a place of companionship and care in time of need that served a population that the priest/minister/rabbi/imam got to know on a first name basis. It was never meant to apply to a concert hall that seats over 10,000 and blends the worst of Puritanism with politics.
