62. Tripple proxy war. Don't forget Turkey and Kurdistan
WWIII scenario:

Turki's job will be al-Zarqawi and he'll start pouring billions into the Sunni cause.
Iran will start arming the Shia.
The American and British troops are caught between Iraq and a hard place with the Green Zone becoming Dubya's bunker.
Since the Kurds were not included yet, they'll grasp the opportunity to call for their Free Kurdistan which will trigger Turkey to invade.

Oil will go up, however the price of an AK-47 will go down because of popular demand...

Nice mess indeed...

That map is geography, not demography. Most of the Sunni area (the whole southwest quadrant outside the irrigated Euphrates valley is sparsely inhabited desert.

The Sunnis do have an advantage, in that they made up the elite of the former Iraqi Army.

Iran, Bahrain, Lebanon, Azerbaijan all seem to have Shia majorities. World demographics show many more Sunni than Shia (though figures are inaccurate they still show a majority Sunni by far) and Arabia's # far outweigh Iraqi Shia though what that means for this go 'round is still up in the air.

Seems to me that if the Saudis had actively opposed an invasion of Iraq back in 02-03, this whole catastrophe might have been averted. But they colluded and connived with Dubya to see what would come of the invasion of a fellow Arab country, to see what was in it for them. Now the entire world can see what happens when you get your photograph taken holding Bush's hand. Tsk tsk.
