Okay, nobody panic...
Edited on Wed Dec-13-06 02:40 AM by Mythsaje
I'd appreciate it if people made an effort to keep this thread kicked for those who are regular readers of my posts so they know nothing has happened to me.

Unfortunately, because I'm not selling enough books yet, I had to take an obstensibly "part-time" position through the holiday season at Target. My orientation was today. I'm working every day through this next weekend, then nearly forty hours this week. It IS the week before Christmas, so I'm sure they need all the help they can get.

From what I understand Target is a much better retail employer than, say, Wal-Mart, but it was funny that the first video they had us watch was one on unions. It was pretty one-sided, talking about how unions ask for a lot, promise things they cannot guarantee, and drain the resources of both the employer AND "team members." While I agree that there maybe be some employers that don't necessarly need unions to keep them in line, I'm not ready to make any judgements about it with Target. Yet.

Anyway...My schedule is going to be really weird for a while, with me not only doing the day job thing, but trying to continue writing in the time allowed, as well as finishing the remodeling we've been doing in our bathroom.

I'll be back to posting as soon as I can, but, in the meantime, if you find you miss my posts desperately, considering reading back through my journal and archives.

Or, to show your support for my writing, you could conceivably visit my website as a sign of support (no purchases necessary) at http://www.sajewilliams.com and, if you have the quirky motivation to do so, drop me a personal e-mail telling me how much you like it.

More than anything I just think I need moral support. I so desperately want to get out of day-job hell and this excursion back in, however brief it may be, will most definitely impact my writing time--and not in a good way.

The moral support of my fellow DUers would be invaluable and I thank you ahead of time.

Saje

2. Good luck
You may come across some creative stimuli at the day job. You never know.

4. I often do...which is one of the positive side of it.
But all I really want to do is write anymore, and remodel this old house. But it'll help me pay for my kids' Christmas presents and my wife's yule present--though she already ordered it.

:)

I just want to write and muck around the house. After painting the bathroom, I'm supposed to be installing tyle, and after that the next step is to tear out half of the living room carpet and put down Pergo.

But it's going to cost me in writing time no matter how you cut it. My poor characters are stuck in a cliffhanger I've GOT to rescue them! ;)

5. I'm happy with a laptop, an old house I can slowly work on,
my wife, a beater of a car, and a few minor techie toys to make life bearable. And as long as I can write, see my kids at least once a year, and do the things that make me happy, it's all good.

10. Yeah, it's all good
Thank the hell that we can find solace where we can...

Yours is mine and mine is yours.

It's all good (or so says a great writer who I have read).

Keep your lamp trimmed and burning..

7. Muchos Gracias...
Writing is my life. As my old boss used to say, "you're just killing time until you make it." He was one of my first fans.

Day jobs almost universally suck. If I could devote all my time to writing and rennovating this house, I would be a happy, happy man.

8. I hope that wish of yours will be answered
You're talented, and I certainly hope that you can increase your income from writing, so that you're able to live comfortably on that income. Best of luck to you.

9. One of my editors thinks my books have the potential to gain
a serious cult following, so I'm crossing my fingers and hoping she's right.

Thanks for the wish for luck. I can use all of it I can get.

11. The Muse will still love you, even if you do work at Target! And...
...someone sent me an e-mail saying Sears and Target are holding jobs for people who get sent to Iraq, for as much as two years.

Small comfort, maybe, but a little showing of integrity on their part.

12. Plenty of famous writers have needed "day jobs" for a while.
You might pick up something good for a Bukowski note here and there.

14. Kick - Sneak a few of your books in and leave them on the shelves at target :)
Get a few people hooked and asking about them at the store ;)

Good luck, your page is bookmarked already and I will go there again later today.

15. K&R: Sorry you've got to do the day job thing...
Is that legal, that they can make you watch an anti-union screed? Probably is, but doesn't seem like it should be.

Went to your site recently from another thread, I thought it was very well done.

Hope you're soon able to get back to your REAL profession of writing full time. In the meantime:

Merry Hannukah-Kwanza-Christmas-Winter Solstice-Holidays! And don't forget to smile at the stressed consumers!

:D

17. Most authors are in this position
Only a tiny percentage can support themselves by their writing.

It sucks, and it's unfair, but it's the way it is for almost all of us.
