Immigration raids stir controversy in So. Colorado
Yesterdays immigration raids throughout middle America...

Six states were targeted in a massive immigration raid, Tuesday, including Colorado. Hundreds of employees at the Swift & Co. meatpacking plant, in Greeley, were arrested. The impact of those raids has been felt in Hispanic communities across the country and has renewed the debate over illegal immigration.

Activist Joe Barrera, Ph.D., said the date was chosen to intimidate illegal immigrants, as well as the overall Hispanic community. "It's a message of contempt, number one, that they would stage this thing on a day that is sacred to Mexicans and is honored as a big important day," he said. "What they want to show is that they want to keep the cultural celebrations from spreading in the United States."

If the day was so damn sacred, why were they all at work?

I saw another video on the national news last night where one lady was crying that this just wasn't fair and pleading for someone to stop the raids.
Did anyone stop them from stealing the identities to gain jobs in this country?

2. where are the fines for the EMPLOYER?
Those folks wouldn't BE there if the employers hadn't hired them.

7. The employer probably took buses across the border
to bring the employees here in the first place.

15. The reason that the employer wasn't penalized
is because the workers were using stolen identities. So they not only came to the country illegally they obtained work through fraud, just the sort of folks that we want to encourage.

By the way, what special day was it?

Regards, Mugu

17. We aren't encouraging it
The employers bring the workers here. And they help them get those stolen identities.

Now think about who the bad guy really is in this picture. It's not rocket science.

3. It's not fair that the law is enforced?
It's fair that pot smokers are arrested, cigarette smokers cited, helmetless riders ticketed, but this is a message of contempt? Joe, give me a break! Liberal I may be, but you'll have to do better than that!

4. It's not fair that the law is enforced?
He lied to the country and got us into war. He gave away the country to all of his cronies. He's done more to merit Impeachment than any president in history. That the law is not inforced in the White House... but I digress.

5. So as long as Bush isn't prosecuted for his crimes, there should be
Edited on Wed Dec-13-06 07:47 AM by AzDar
NO criminals prosecuted, is that your argument?
That makes little sense to me.
Certainly Bush should be behind bars, as should these illegal immigrants who have probably ruined, or at the very least, tremendously harmed, the lives of those who have had their identities stolen.
Management should be in the cell right along side them, as well.

6. Management most certainly should be in cells right now
it's always the little guy who goes to jail, never the leaders. Preznits included.

16. Of course that's NOT my argument!
Edited on Wed Dec-13-06 09:33 PM by acmejack
My argument is that it is fully correct to arrest illegal immigrants even if it disrupts the employers business. I am all for the arrest & prosecution of the HR department manager, their one on one manager, as well as their direct supervising manager and so forth and so on, policing up the entire chain of so called accountability. After all, isn't that the argument that is made when attempting to rationalize the vast differential in executive remuneration?

Now lets all stop being obtuse and pretending it wasn't perfectly apparent what in the OP I was responding to. It isn't as if I appeared here on this board twenty minutes ago and was an unknown quantity and my politics were an unknown. Jim Gilchrist's aryan twin sister, the xenophobic lurker? I think not! So please, lets all calm down, get real and quit trying to score cheap points at my expense. Thank you so very much...

9. what about their families?
i say round them up and ship them back too. if their kids are born here, tough shit, they go back just like their illegal dad or mom. there`s a lot of real americans that got pushed aside because of illegals taking good paying jobs in those packing plants across america. really it`s time to put a stop to this crap. i for one am fed up with this mixing foreign traditions here in the united states and i say we just celebrate real american traditions. we should show no mercy or understanding when it comes to these illegals from south of our borders. this is a perfect example why we need the wall across out southern frontier.

10. They should definitely have rounded up the lady crying foul
It takes nerve to enter a country illegally then proclaim it's unfair when they want to kick you out.

I am not against legal immigration to America but the illegals coming to America and taking jobs that American need and doing it for less because the employer can exploit them really bites me in the ass.
I knew a lot of people who lost their jobs back in Iowa to illegals, that all started during the Reagan years when they decided to bust the labor unions. They would close a plant down, laying off all the employees, then open it up a few months later and wouldn't even offer jobs to those who worked there before.

23. You seem to think this was a "clean" roundup. . .
......"Stormtroopers came in with machine guns, rounded into the cafeterias, separated identified citizens from non-citizens, and then they took away all green cards and put non-citizens onto buses," regardless of the immigrants' legal status, Jill Cashen of the United Food and Commercial Workers union (UCFW) told me this morning.

Cashen said that reports from all six states confirmed that legal immigrants were among those taken away, and have not been returned. "We're still trying to find out where the buses went," she said. "Children have been left at church day cares. Nobody knows where these people are."

Recently unsealed court documents show that DHS had identified 170 identity-fraud suspects it wished to apprehend, but that the agency wanted to round up as many as 5,000 other workers because it "further expect to apprehend persons who are engaged in large-scale identity theft<.>" Union officials say the total number of detained workers may be higher than 5,000. (Update: We've uploaded those court documents to our document collection here.)

You are kind of fast on the "round 'em up & ship 'em out" bandwagon. .

14. They should be locking up the employers
along with the illegals.
Importing labor has much the same effect on the workers of this nation as exporting the jobs, only with greater costs to the tax-payers.

26. Thank God for the heros rounding up poor people trying to survive.
"Give me your tired, your poor,

Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,

The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.

Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,

I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Preferably white, wealthy, English speakers, who won't cause us any inconvenience.

27. why aren't US citizens protesting
these companies hiring illegals and paying them less? They direct their anger at the illegals here working. They are also the victims. Go after the companies!! Everyone including illegals are simply trying to survive.
