Even the blind can't get help from this administration
http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/wireStory?id=2721915

By MARTIN CRUTSINGER AP Economics Writer

WASHINGTON Dec 13, 2006 (AP)— An effort to force a redesign of the nation's currency so paper money could be more easily used by the blind would be too expensive and could cause undue hardships on the vending machine industry, the Bush administration says.

The administration asked an appeals court on Tuesday to overturn a ruling that could require the introduction of such features as Braille lettering, micro-perforations or varying the sizes of denominations to aid the blind and visually impaired.

1. Admin to Blind: "Just Use Credit Cards"
I kid you not.

This, of course, presupposes that *everyone* in the world has credit cards because those (insert dirty word of choice) up there don't know anyone who doesn't. And the idea of someone choosing not to participate in the 'pay tomorrow' whirlwind is so completely alien their little minds turn off at the very notion.

2. Cash is more and more becoming my method of choice for payment of daily sundries.
There's no associated bank charges, I don't have to wait for the "authorization" from the credit card machine and, best of all, the purchase isn't tracked by any corporate or government entity, which suits me just fine.

Interesting about gwb's loyalty to vending machine companies trumping doing what's right for the blind. And, he just keeps blathering this ridiculous stuff and no one really calls him out. MKJ

3. Now I understand
This may get me in trouble... but I just may not understand this enough... I agree that redesigning the currency would be to high a cost.. But i was thinking wouldn't it be cheaper to just supply the blind with currency readers? Then they would only need either a audio call for the value or a braille type on a keypad type thing.... I am just thinking of some ideas

4. They're redesigning the currency
approximately every 3 years anyway to try to foil counterfeiting. European currency has raised dots on it to differentiate denominations. The next redesign is coming up very soon. Why not add something that would end up being cheaper than supplying the blind with currency readers that are expensive and not very usable in shopping situations.
