Actor Peter Boyle Dies

(CBS) NEW YORK Veteran actor Peter Boyle, who played the crabby father of Ray Romano on the CBS comedy "Everbody Loves Raymond," died Tuesday night in New York, CBS News has learned.

Boyle was born Oct. 18, 1935, in Philadelphia. He left a calling as a Christian monk in the 1950s to become an actor, and in 1970, he won acclaim playing an intolerant factory worker in the movie "Joe."

In 1974, Boyle joined Mel Brooks to star as the famous monster in "Young Frankenstein." Boyle reportedly was in full monster make-up for the film when he met his future wife, Rolling Stone reporter Loraine Alterman Boyle.

2. He was looking pretty tired in that last season of Raymond.
But he and Doris Roberts always made that show worth watching.

12. Best friends with John Lennon
Larry King had the cast of Raymond on and he asked Boyle about Lennon. Boyle got choked up and said he would rather not talk about John.

Amazing actor.

33. Wikipedia-John was Peter's best man
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Boyle

Boyle was friendly with John Lennon, who was the best man at Boyle's 1977 wedding to Lorraine Alterman, with whom he has two daughters, Lucy and Amy. Boyle met Lennon through his wife, a reporter for Rolling Stone who was friends with Yoko Ono. <1>

Aside from the obvious cinematic accolades, I really liked him as Robert Redford's campaign manager in The Candidate.

Everyone won an award on the show but him, I thought he should get one too.

I also could never get that creepy character he played in "Joe" out of my mind when I saw him. That probably means it was good acting.

Such a fine performer. Whatever he did, was made better by his involvement.

He guest starred on the X-Files in an episode entitled: "Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose" - memorable, funny and a little sad, just like Peter Boyle.
