1. If you say no you're a self hater if you say yes you're a racist. They are asking
because of Paula Zahn's show last night.

24. She did a show on racism last night. A lady was on there saying that
Edited on Wed Dec-13-06 01:20 PM by xultar
she wasn't racist but she didn't want to eat with a black person or live next to one.

Al Sharpton was like I don't care if you don't want to eat with me but you can't hold me back economically.

Basically people don't want to admit that they are racist or that racism exists but when pushed they'll say and do stoopid shit.

There's racism on all sides and everywhere. No one is immune.

31. I missed the show, but uhm, what the hell was her problem?
Seriously, won't eat or live next to a black person? I just don't understand that, me, I'm a self hater, dammit, and PROUD of it! I really don't like white people, mostly because of the racist attitudes displayed by 99% of them, actually I probably told you this before. I still don't know which is more offensive to me, the fact that they ARE racist assholes, or that they think I'm a "safe" person that they can talk to about this shit.

As for the lady on the show. No one would want to eat with her anyway she was a typical bubbette(female bubba).

37. LOL, true...
I don't really hate myself, and I can't say I hate white people as a rule, but, damn, sometimes they can be infuriating. I was going out with a girl from Puerto Rico a long time ago, and my only white friend at the time, asked me why I was slumming with her. It took me damned near a minute to figure out what the hell he was talking about, then he, very abruptly, stopped being my friend. I guess, the biggest thing is that, while I don't have a temper as a general rule, White folks just say the stupidest shit that pisses me off!

15. We need to reach a point where it is considered embarrassing to
even think of asking such a question.

I grew up in the Leave it to Beaver 50's and the word "nigger" was perfectly acceptable. My elder brother even said he had nothing against niggers, everybody should own one.

The word is still out there as recent events show, and I recently told a fellow I had call friend that I couldn't visit him anymore because he used the word.

However, it is to the point that public use of the word is punishable by being ostracized.

Someday asking that question will result in the same.

30. That word didn't just re-appear.
It's never gone away. It's meaning and use have changed. You hear it from African-Americans in every medium. Frankly, I'm sick of the adulation to the contumelious effect of this word. A racist is a racist-just a swine perpetually yearning for slop to slosh in. if we have to pretend that the "n-word" offends us, or upsets us forever, it's going to grow tiresome. I don't care if someone drops an N bomb. I'm certainly not going to waste time and energy hoping that a word becomes ostracized. Why give that much more power to it?

I will not respect, abide, assist, or tolerate racist behavior, nor will I bequeath my considerable arsenal of awesome alliteration upon the plebeian practitioners of prejudice. Simply said: Fuck em. It doesn't effect me, hurt me, or even upset me. If someone wants to hate me, let them. IF someone wants to harbor hate in their heart, it's their problem. Not ours.

Look at Michael Richards. Who was hurt by his actions? Himself. The worst thing a racist can do is reveal his true thoughts. Far be it from me to stop them, or even discourage them. I will judge them. But I'm not going to waste a minute of life letting it upset me or anger me.

" . . . NOR WILL I BEQUEATH MY CONSIDERABLE ARSENAL OF AWESOME ALLITERATION UPON THE PLEBEIAN PRACTITIONERS OF PREJUDICE." (all caps mine for emphasis)

You just did, and rightly so. Words have power, particularly when wielded by those with a pulpit, bully or otherwise, or those with expertise in their use.

Bigots don't punish themselves, they only reveal themselves. Judgment of them reveals no anger or hurt, no perceived or imagined weakness, only the level of respect due them.

It is not the bigot we discourage. Theirs is a world of their own making, complete and finished. It is the ones who follow we discourage.

44. I think we more or less agree....
Simply said, the N word is as meaningless as a fluffernutter rolled in jellybutter. You have to let it bother you. Once you elevate a word to a level that it is banned, you're doing the racist's job for them. If we give them a word that holds that sort of power-they don'
Also, I think that when a bigot is revealed, he is punished. Hence the secrecy. Most people will not work or do business with a racist. And more often then not, the people that are the most blatant racists have the least to offer society. There are not a lot of Doctors involved in white supremacy groups, whereas there's probably an overage of NASCAR enthusiasts and phone operators at the Bead-Dazzler head quarters.

46. Yeah, our approach is just different.
Take the power away by seeing them for what they are or, in my case, beat the livin' shit out of them with the power of the words they choose.

Both work. The high road is less traveled, but the low road has more beer joints and honky tonks . . .

28. People will always orientate around others who
they are most like. I dont remember the particulars, but there was a study in the 1970s that put 100 people in a large room for several hours...they were strangers to each other. they had all had iq tests before the proceedure. At the end of the designated time period, all had formed groups in socializing with the others who had like IQ scores. And this makes sense, really. This study only looked at IQ, but I am sure it would also be true for age, cultural background, education level, etc. and I would think that would also be true of race, especially if cultural backgrounds were also different, but all these things make up who a person is as an adult...and who they will "like" to be around when it comes to other humans.

43. True but I think race would be the least important
When you get right down to it, race makes the least difference. A poor white and a poor black have more in common than they do with a rich white and a rich black, respectively.

Education is going to make the most difference. A white person or a black person who have a college degree, say, could well be more comfortable talking than to a person of the same race with little or no education or awareness (and using education in a broad sense, some people can know a lot without degrees).

Or religion, one would think even a rabid white right wing Christianist would get that they have more in common with a black preacher than one of them elitist and godless libruls.

If you ask people "are you racist?"

Most people say no.

If you ask "do you prefer to be around people of your own kind?"

A lot of the people who said "no" will say "yes."
