Leahy just put Gonzalez on notice.
Apparently he told him last week he would be receiving an invitation to the Hill soon to appear before the Judicial Committee. Just now he said that when Gonzalez appears that answers such as "I can't talk about that" or "We'll get back to you on that" will not be accepted.

Ka-boom.

24. There is a Reason They Never Put Any Top Members of the Regime Under Oath
The Bibles they used tended to spontaneously combust upon contact with so much evil.
It was becoming a serous fire hazard.

65. LOL!
Yes, Virginia, there is a Senate. It exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Senate! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no child-like faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

70. What else there would not be if there really were no Senate:
no oversight; no co-equal branch of government to help balance out the power grab by those who believe in the imperial president with dicatatorial powers (i.e., the "unitary executive").

18. ANTHRAX
http://grassley.senate.gov/releases/2006/12122006.pdf

December 11, 2006

The Honorable Alberto Gonzales

Attorney General

United States Department of Justice

950 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW

Washington, DC 20535

Dear Attorney General Gonzales:

As you know, the Department of Justice and the FBI recently refused a number of Congressional requests for information regarding its five-year-old investigation into the 2001 Anthrax attacks. The FBI also announced a blanket prohibition on any further anthrax briefings, citing concerns about alleged public disclosures of sensitive information following previous briefings on the case. This is an inappropriate response to legitimate Congressional oversight requests.

Given recent revelations that FBI agents were the anonymous sources for New York Times stories casting suspicion on “person of interest,” Stephen Hatfill, it appears that the FBI may itself be responsible for the inappropriate disclosures of sensitive case information. Whether on Capitol Hill or within the FBI, individuals who make inappropriate disclosures should be held accountable. However, as an institution, Congress cannot be cut-off from detailed information about the conduct of one of the largest investigations in FBI history. That information is vital in order to fulfill its Constitutional responsibility to conduct oversight of the Executive Branch.

Therefore, we request that you direct the FBI to provide Congress with a comprehensive briefing on the status of the five-year-old anthrax investigation.

Sincerely,

Chuck Grassley Rush Holt

22. What's he gonna do?
What are his options? I can see this coming.

Leahy says "you have to give me straight answers" Gonzalez says "no I don't" Leahy says "yes you do " Gonzalaz says "no I don't" rinse, wash, repeat

This will go on forever until Leahy announces he has reached an agreement with the Justus Department and no further hearings need to be held. Both sides claim victory, and democracy fails once again.

What are the chances Leahy will show some spine? He's a nice man.

surprised by Leahy, and by what he and other dems will accomplish. And you won't be hearing him making any statements about how he won't pursue something for the state of the nation. He's been my Senator for a good long time. I've met him and spoken with him, and he appears on VPR's switchboard program regularly to answer questions from Vermonters. He's been good and pissed for years now, and candid about his determination to hold bushco accountable.

He told him to "expect an invitation soon" when he had lunch with him two weeks ago. There were two others at this lunch as well (names were in Leahy's remarks in answering the question).

Gonzo's response, according to Leahy, was more or less that's what he was expecting.
