Yahoo! is eliminating it's news-linked message boards

Last night I visited an old Yahoo board I used to frequent. It is still online, but this big banner appeared above the board. Good riddance, I guess. But I'll certainly miss that one particular board. Almost as fun as DU, but with only a handful of regulars.

Yahoo! News is working on new ways for readers to comment on the news and participate in a discussion around it. While we work on our new community features, the message boards that have been linked from individual news articles will be taken offline Dec. 19.

As currently set up, the Yahoo! News message boards allow a small number of vocal users to dominate the discussion. In addition, related discussions from similar news articles are not easily linked. Over the next few months, we plan to offer new discussion forums based on topics in the news and incorporating the latest features to foster a better discussion for all of our readers.

1. I quit going to Yahoo boards

soon after I tried them. I used the same username I do here, and what I got was a lot of vile anti-Muslim posts and no discussion. Glad to know that you found somewhere you could actually talk.

5. The board that I posted on was "secret"

But not really. It was linked to the January 2002 story about Ashcroft covering the statue of justice, and thus garnered the knickname "The Titty Board." Over the years, most of the freepers disappeared, but a few core hung on. I actually met some good friends there, and even met a few of them in person. Timbuk3, a DUer, was/is one of them. It really didn't fit the stereotype of a Yahoo! board. It was peppered with engineers, academics, ex-pats...lots of interesting perspectives and a surprising amount of intelligent debate. Of course, it ebbed and flowed, and had dark periods of freeper trolldom. But for some reason, nearly five years after the story disappeared from Yahoo, that board is still there. They tried to take it down a couple of times and got all sorts of bitching from the regulars, and it would reappear (can you say "ad impressions?"). I used to posts a lot of stories from there on DU when I visited both sites regularly. It is probably the one Yahoo! board that wasn't just a freeper lounge. Probably because it was kept "secret."

4. they are getting sued by a lawyer

who was on the boards and read something he didn't like about his client and the posters called him a crook and schister.....he complained and so its going to court......
