With all the flapping of gums about perceived front runners for 2008, the news media is ignoring many prospects who could come out of the woodwork before the 2008 campaign gets into full gear, about a year from now. This does an extreme disservice to the other prospects, to say nothing of the democratic process by which we select our presidents.
Here's one person who could spoil the media's 24/7 McCain-Giuliani/Hillary-Obama slug fest.
An editorial from the Topeka Capital-Journal posted on 11 December:
The issue, raised last month during the Kansas gubernatorial campaign, was intended to put Kathleen Sebelius on the spot.
Instead, it merely highlighted what most of us already knew — Sebelius' star shines brightly, both in Kansas and across the country.
Otherwise, Republican challenger Jim Barnett wouldn't have been forced to raise the double-edged question: Would Sebelius serve all four years of her term?
You don't ask that of someone unless there's a strong reason to expect otherwise.
Like maybe being a vice presidential pick in 2008.
Like maybe being a Cabinet secretary should a Democrat be elected president.
Like maybe something even loftier than either of those.
