Circumcised male DUers: Do you feel like you've been "mutilated?"
I certainly don't. Nor do my brothers or sons.

Funny how it seems like it's always women (whose business this isn't) who use that "mutilation" word regarding circumcision. I've never heard a guy say it.

4. I'm staying out of this fight, but a man at my undergrad school once wrote an
ode to his (missing) foreskin that probably used language similar to yours.

He was, apparently, quite serious.

8. I have no memory of having the part that's been removed,
so this seems completely normal.

Now, with regard to female circumcision, that's a vicious, hideous business, and a term like "mutilation" is well justified. I'm guessing that's where this terminology comes from.

13. I believe our circumcisions do not remove the penis,
except in the case of John Bobbit. The female circumcision as I understand it remove the clitoris, this is the primary organ along with the brain giving them sexual pleasure.

Botched circumsion. Horrific experiences of pediatrician attempting to pull back and break (I cringe) the adhesion. I would never ever put a baby boy of mine through that again. My rationalization (although well meaning) was wrong and now he looks neither like his father nor his friends. If it wasn't my business they shouldn't have asked me. And my husband calls it mutilation (in light of our son) all the time now.

17. Oh, Mrs. G. I'm so sorry.
My dad was circumsized at 21 in Korea. He had had repeated kidney and urinary tract infections from babyhood and when one of the surgeons recommended it over there due to the *sometimes* erratic flow of antibiotics, he willingly had it done.

He always said it saved him from a lifetime of sickness.

28. Thanks Midlo...
If I could only go back. For those who would say it didn't traumatize my son and that he was too young to suffer repercussions...well they didn't have to change his diaper, they didn't have to hold him while he screamed at any visit to a doctor until he was four. I could go on but I don't want to embarass an 8 year old.

33. That is truly a horrific story
and personally, i'm sorry for the pain it's caused you and your son. but, being opposed to circumcision for that reason is to be opposed to all surgeries, as they all carry the risk of surgeon error.

please don't think i'm trying to be nasty, i'm really not.

I find it an interesting question. Yes, both circumcised. It's certainly become controversial in recent years ... so, I'm interested in the male POV.

19. Frankly....
... I'd prefer not to have a foreskin. (I don't) This is the main reason I had both my sons circumcised.

There are lots of things about penises that folks who don't have one really don't understand :)

21.  I can't say now
I had no choice really , I can tell you this is NOT something I would choose to do if it were up to me .

It seemed to be the normal thing to do when I was born in 1949 . Who knows , perhaps there is a certain amount of trauma associated with this experience even if we don't recall the pain .

I don't have children yet, but I've decided that I will allow my husband to make the decision about circumcision, as he's the one who has lived with it and knows what it means.

I don't think my parents should have made that choice for me, though I rarely get bitter about it and think some of the anti-circumcision propaganda is exaggerated.

I think parents should let it be; if the kid wants to do it when he grows up he can do it. You could say mine is a "pro-choice" position on circumcision. There's really no reason to make that decision for someone.

And I think it's fucked-up when a mother thinks it's her business; that's overbearing and abusive in my opinion for a parent to impose on their child's sexuality and I'd wonder about them. It would be one thing when people do it for religious reasons but there they are obeying what they see as a higher authority, not saying that it's their decision to be making.

40. Umm...I'm a guy and yes, I feel somewhat mutilated.
I wish it had not been done, but now I have no choice in the matter. If you like being circumcized, great, but I think its something that should be decided as an adult and not a decision to be made for you at birth.

On the other hand its not the biggest problem facing the world today by any stretch so I don't understand the vitriol displayed by both sides of the argument. Do what you think you need to do and let the world keep turning, I say.

the oldest, who is 50, was not circumcized.

After he was born, it pretty much became standard procedure.
