Democrat party- thus suggesting its not democratic (even * does it). It's quite irritating. Now Pelosi gave it back to them-hehe.

61. Semantically identical to Nazi and other bigoted slurs against Jews.
Edited on Thu Dec-14-06 07:20 PM by tom_paine
Point #1:

Take the insult, "Jew Lawyer". Why does this comment have such force and vitriol? Is it not properly descripive of someone of the Jewish religion who practices law?

No, even if one disregards the tone, semantically what has been done is an adjective is improperly converted to a noun. Doesn't sound like much, but add a contemptuous tone and it is clearly an insult.

For instance, "I just had an appointment with Mr. Tabor, a Jewish lawyer." versus "I just saw Tabor, that Jew Lawyer."

The transformation of "Democratic Party" to "Democrat Party", especially combined with tone of voice, is IDENTICAL in semantiuc structure and intent.

If you think this similarity is a coincidence, I have a century-old bridge in Brooklyn to sell you. It's hardly been driven on.

Point #2:

This insult becomes quite a bit more troubling when one adds the "rat" emphasis. As we all know, both Nazi and Bushevik propaganda uses varying degrees of dehumanization of their fellow citizens as it's centerpiece.

And both Nazis and Busheviks alike frequently refer to their fellow citizens as rats or vermin.

or maybe even spelled Republhicks

34. Who cares what "they" do?
I didn't see the show, don't know what word was used instead of "Republican". I just hope it was not disrespectful. Why push away the fence-sitters?

In the media, using proper names looks more professional, while we go about the business of improving things.

Improving health care, education, environment, and ending the war is more important. Making up funny names or insulting names should be saved for comedy shows. (and computer sites, of course :))

Being an old fart (well, roughly as old as N. Pelosi - 39yrs), I would look to past masters of the language of Democrats for examples. What words would be used by F.Roosevelt, Kennedy, Carter, W.Clinton? I might not use LBJ as an example :).

Their use of "Democrat Party" has gotten to be so pervasive that people who have no idea it's incorrect are using it, as well as the media and even the pResident. If they want to be addressed respectfully, they should earn it by treating us that way.

Do we want to sound like Tom Delay? Emulate Tom Delay? We're better than that.

Save the trash talk and end-zone dances until after we've accomplished some real improvement, like peace or health care. Not just because "our guys" occupy the nice offices.

oh, yeah, the screen name.

When I signed up I had a 101 fever, and was spending the day off work drunk on cough syrup, going through the mindless tedious process of converting some old vinyl to .wav, then to cd, then importing to iTunes and the ipod.

One of the bits on the vinyl got stuck in my head. I'll just borrow the name until the Firesign Theater lawyers show up at my door. Wearing huge floppy yellow rubber wing-tips. I'm sure they'll be Republican lawyers.

Regards.

46. It's a weak reactionary phrase...
It's more effective to just correct them, in my opinion. Let them know that we are the "Democratic" Party. Everytime they say it, correct them. I think that is the most effective way to counter this rather than to try and find a name to call them. Just my opinion.

They go on about "weakness" and "appeasement" and smell blood whenever. They think differently. You have to stand up to bullies. This shows them they are being stood up to.

In this country today, it is "weakness" to take the high road, but looks "tough" to stand up to them.

I'm afraid I can't always remember the proper name. Maybe it's because it's been named incorrectly so many times in the media for as long as I've voted - or paid attention to the two parties, so it doesn't feel as offensive to me - cause if you repeat it enough - it starts to sound normal.

on comcast.net just this week. (And they don't usually come across to me as especially partisan.)

It's the right's way of getting in a little jab which most people don't notice but it's very deliberately an insult. Watch for it now, and you'll see how often they do it. It's not an accident when politicians or pundits do this; they know better.
