They told my niece that she was going to S. Korea, but it's Iraq instead.
She's 30, joined the Army last year, they paid all her bills as an enticement to get her to join, and then I believe they offered her a deal. Stay in 2 years longer than the usual service time, and be guaranteed that you will not be sent to Iraq.

So they've been telling her for months now that she's definitely going to South Korea, yesterday she found out, she thinks, that she's being sent to Iraq anyway. She's not happy about it, and frankly, she's not too crazy about Army life.

Does anyone else know of any switcheroos being pulled on our service men and women?

2. Sadly, your niece was crazy to...
ever believe any promises made about deployment -- recruiters will say just about anything to get a warm body.

My advice to your niece is for her to start talking often and loudly about her lesbian lover she left back home.

3. That seems unfair ...
I was under the impression soldiers could use the "wish list" to narrow the places they'd prefer to serve, but I was never given the opportuinity to say where I wouldn't want to go.
In cases such as this, would there not be a "contract", of sorts?

...O...

6. I may be wrong.
I want to stress that. She writes me and some of it is a little disjointed.

5. If it's not in writing
All the words in the dictionary don't mean squat, add to that the usual "needs of the service" requirement.

I served in the US Army for 13 years, and one thing I learned was to make sure that everything was written in the contract before I signed. Unfortunately the needs of the service pretty much overrides
even a signed contract.

You have my best wishes and hopes for her safety.

7. The black mother at the Kucinich press conference earlier this week
said her daughter who was to serve her time in Germany but was being sent to Iraq too. There must be others who were also deceived.

The best solution is to bring all the troops OUT of Iraq now.

Sorry that your niece is being caught up in the BushLies.

8. As the "redskins" used to say in the old westerns,
"The Great White Father speaks with a forked tongue."

Too bad the current generation didn't grow up with the Saturday matinées.

9. Nothing yet, but I have a nephew who was promised he'd
be sent to Alaska, Korea or Germany. He just finished boot camp and is in Fort Gordon now for communications training. I've been betting they'll pull a switcheroo on him as soon as or before he's finished his training.

15. If they ship him up here
and he gets attached to the 172nd Stryker Brigade, he's liable to have to go. They just got back after they were "redeployed" by Rummy shortly before they were to return. About 3800 soldiers came home. 26 did not, 9 in the 4 months they were "extended" in Baghdad.

Welcome home, all you who made it. Thank God you did.

From this:

To Fairbanks in December. They made it for the holidays, at least.

11. My semi-adopted son was supposed to get out in March 2007
but they are extending him thru May 2008. He's coming home from Ft. Lewis on Monday for the holidays. He's been stateside since he enlisted in January 2003 and is scheduled to head over to Iraq in May 2007. We'll definitely make the best of our time together.

And as soon as he ships out for Iraq, I will have zero tolerance for these pro-war, chicken shit emeffs! My gloves will be off.

Memphis Flyer
News of the Weird December 3, 2006

http://www.newsoftheweird.com/archive/nw061203.html

After shooting video undercover in 10 Army recruiting offices in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, ABC News released in November an episode of recruiters telling a prospect that no one is going to Iraq anymore. "No, we're bringing people back," he said, and his partner followed with, "We're not at war. War ended a long time ago." In a separate on-camera interview, Col. Robert Manning, who is in charge of Army recruiting in the Northeast, generously told ABC News that he disagreed with the recruiters. "We are a nation and Army at war still."

16. the government lies
People are really naive to ever believe the government, it has and will always lie,
its only purpose is the continuation and expansion of its tax base, ours is surviving,
these intents inevitably come to odds, as the sovereign independence of the human spirit
fights with the states will to enslave.

I hope your friend survives and learns from the lesson.
