Army Trucks still patrolling the Streets of New Orleans |
|
Still a strange sight of those Army Trucks and Soldiers in the city. Did a little christmas shopping this morning, had a beer at Johnny White's at 9:30, great time for a beer. Big film production going on on Royal Street, someone said it was a new Brad Pitt Movie. City still has a lonesome feeling to it on too many occasions. Got my wife a nice bright Orange button up shirt with New Orleans County Jail printed in large black letters on the back and an inmate number printed on the front. Maybe I'll get lucky and get to be the warden.
(There is no New Orleans County Louisiana, however I believe such a shirt would attract the attention of unknowing law enforcement agencies, just in case you want to get one for a "friend.")

Will be in New Orleans
We want to tour the 9th Ward on our own. I assume it's relatively safe there in the daytime. This is our 3rd Post-K trip, but the first time we're going to see the real devastation.

I'm very happy you are headed to New Orleans. I think it is relatively easy to get through the ninth ward. Not much traffic and barely any humans. There are still parts that look as if its 30 August 2005. I hope you have a great visit other then the sadness that will creep into your soul if you go to the Ninth.

3. Until I Looked At An Online Map... |
|
I didn't realize how compact an area the Lwr. 9th Ward is. Like a box, surrounded on all sides by water of some sort, or so it appears.
The map I saw did not indicate the levy location, i.e. the one which gave way, but I heard it described as being the northernmost boundary of the 9th ward area. Florida Street parallels it I think.
Anyways, I'm sure it will be a sobering experience. I would have liked to do something to help the day we're going there, other than just supporting the economy, but my friend thinks a few hours isn't really enough time to volunteer.
I had another crazy idea of going up to some of the residents and offering them a cold beer/soda. I realize it's not much, but I feel the need to do some sort of good will, and not just drive through the neighborhoods staring at the catastrophe.
