How do you explain crazy in the head Republicans? |
|
I live in Utah, where they all congregate. I'm outnumbered. Yes, there are a few progressives here. I even saw lawn signs for our Democratic candidates in a neighborhood yard. But far more frequently I'm confronted with crazy in the head ideology. Like global warming isn't real (they've been listening to Bush). Like PTSD isn't real (won't our soldiers be conforted to know THAT :sarcasm:). Like the disabled should work no matter what, despite conveniently failing to enforce the ADA or provide any support to help them work.
I had a conversation with a local religious leader who knocked on my door. We were talking about Republicans who think it's OK to kill people to save 5 cents on their taxes (cuts in medicare, food stamps, want to eliminate social security, etc.). I asked him why Jesus said "render unto Ceasar that which is Ceasar's" and I asked him if he believed in that. It knocked him back a bit, but it was pretty clear he didn't like what I was saying. Then I asked him if he believed ANYTHING Jesus said, like do unto others and love one another. I thought he was going to come through the door and strangle me. I told him I preferred Jesus' version of Christianity to his. Then I told him about Harry Reid, and said he might want to read up on him. Harry Reid is LDS, so it really gets the goat of the locals who are mouthing off revolting Republican trash. And I figure - what the heck - they might learn something from MAJORITY LEADER Reid!
Like I said, off their rocker Republicanism that even trumps the local religion. It doesn't speak well of them, I don't think. My religious views don't change just because George Bush got elected to the White House.
How do you explain the total denial of reality that crazy in the head Republicans experience?

1. If you live in Utah, you may as well just give up and save yourself. |
|
They're way too many out there for you to fight them and keep your sanity.
There's no dishonor in giving up in the face of insurmountable numbers. Don't know about anyone else, but I'll still respect you if you just concentrate on saving yourself. Sometimes it's the only way out.

3. Ignorance, mostly; willful ignorance |
|
But part of the cure is just what you did with the fellow who came knocking at your door: Provide some facts and some context, and above all, stay in communication. Sure, Dinglefritz wanted to come through the door at you when you disturbed his rock bottom, core beliefs. But if you stay in touch, you get to ask him the question again: Why did Jesus say thus-and-such, and how does that comport with what you believe? And if the two don't match up, does that create an obligation on your part to -- at the very least -- re-examine your beliefs?
You might find that the crazy in the head person can begin rehabilitation with a liberal (pun intended) application of facts and reason.
