40. Once you find your quitting method, Q-tips can help ...
... when I finally quit for good, cold turkey, after three tries (I'm smoke-free 20 years, and don't EVER wish for a coffin nail), I kept Q-tips in my office desk drawer and on the coffee table where my ashtray used to be.

Whenever I had that craving to drag on a filter, I stuck a Q-tip in my mouth, and inhaled through THAT (and, of course, held the Q-tip like a cig, to complete the obsessive-complusive gesture).

I didn't use any sort of patch or gum, so I did climb the walls for a while (and then there's the weight gain), but quitting was the best thing I ever did for myself.

Thank God for Q-tips!!

http://stopsmokingnow.com/

You used Q-tips, I used coffee stirrers I removed all the ash tray and when I went for a cigarette outo f habit thats what I got. I now from time to time chew on tooth picks.

The above will explain how the cold laser works. I recently had physical therapy for tear in my knee and they used cold laser therapy. I was a smoker since I was 15 now 50 and now it is 11 months since my last smoke. The first few days I kept drinking water at the urge and finally there was none. I stayed home for a few weeks from friends who smoked and then I had no problem. I watch them smoke now. I gained weight too but the Dr. says its better than smoking.

69. My father did laser, as well...
I believe it cost about two hundred dollars for them to laser your ears and nose. He hasn't smoked since, and it's been seven months for him.

I quit using Nicorette, and in March, it will be two years. Yeah!

As for Obama... smoking is still legal, so whatever..... He should quit, of course... but it doesn't make a difference to how I would vote if he is a smoker or not. It's silly to even care about this.

43. Well, everyone thinks they're the exception and that they single-handedly trump the majority...
...mention something like smoking or SUVs or anything like that in a place like this and there will always be a flurry of "well I'm a smoker/an SUV driver and I'm not that way so none of the others are like that, either."

I was a smoker for about seven or eight years and I remember well the stink of smoke lingering in my clothes all day, the nicotine burned fingers, the dingy and discolored teeth (where I had always had white teeth before I took up the habit), and I was just a pack a day smoker...the heavier smokers I knew then and still know now were and/or are even worse. If you don't see that in yourself, well, remember that the stinky kid in school (I'm sure you had one) didn't know he stank, either.

It took quite a while for the orange burns on my fingers to go away once I quit, and even longer for my teeth to come back to the right shade. It's a person's choice if they want to be that way, but what I said was it's surprising to hear Barack Obama's name in connection with this because he seems bright-eyed, bushy-tailed and freshly scrubbed...which if you're honest you'll admit is not really the usual smoker's temperament/look. He's probably only some half pack or "social" smoker, anyway.

"Self-righteousness" has nothing to do with this and you might be throwing that in to make yourself feel better. I really don't care about what smokers do to themselves so long as they don't make everyone else have to partake in it. The unfortunate thing is, they often do. For example, I'm a New Yorker who rides the subway every day. These subway trains let us out underground and we walk up flights of stairs to get back out. These are narrow, enclosed, confined spaces, and there are very often smokers who don't even have the decency to wait until they get out into the street before they light up. So, everyone behind them has to breathe that in while we all slowly walk up the crowded flight of stairs. When someone is jonesing so bad that they don't even have the manners to wait an extra minute until they get out into the open street to light up and thus not bother the people around them quite as much with something that should only impact on their own health and hygiene, that's true addiction...and a true lack of consideration.

Anyway, it doesn't make me any more or less likely to vote for Obama. Good day to you.

47. "...the usual smoker's temperament/look."
That's right, keep digging. Lots of smokers don't have the "usual smoker's temperament/look", whatever the hell that is and Obama is apparently a case in point. Some say that ex-smokers are the worse when in comes to being self-righteous and I've come to believe that that is quite true. There's are all kinds of obnoxious behavior in the world, including the kind described by the smokers in your post.

And then there's you. If you want to say that most smokers smell like smoke and don't realize it, that's one thing. It's quite another to refer to them as dirtbags.

..."that's right, keep digging."

What a shame since here I am trying to tailor my opinion to please the Great-and-Wonderful-You, as no doubt everyone else in the world should be, as well. Your FOXey "some say" statement is adorable, but again, I don't care enough about you to get "self-righteous" over you.

I saw a thread about Obama, replied in agreement with someone else (frankly, since the day is too short I wouldn't normally go to the trouble of posting an objection to an opinion someone else posted that I found questionable, except maybe if it was obviously a freeper), and now I've got some thin-skinned and apparently eager-to-fight type trying to prolong something pointless and tiresome when there are so many more interesting stories to look at on here, instead.

And yeah, I originally used "dirtbag" (in fact, qualified it as "at least a bit of a dirtbag") as a shorthand so I wouldn't have to type out all of "smoky clothes, nicotine burned fingers, and discolored teeth." So what? Thanks for making me take the long way around to get to the same point.

P.S. I would define the more common "smoker's temperament" as someone not quite as uptight or perky as the goody twoshoes type, which I think Obama at least tried to project if he is not actually is. And the look is easy enough. You can see from the fingers, teeth, and clothing smell. Back when I was an active smoker, homeless strangers would come up to me to bum cigarettes all the time, and I wasn't in the act when they did...they could just tell I was a smoker. Now all they ask for is money.

Yeah, I guess anyone who takes offense at being described as a dirtbag must be thin-skinned.:eyes:

Your little "qualifier" ("at least a bit of a...")is also adorable. And some people DO say that ex-smokers are the worse. Sorry if that sounds FOXey but it also happens to be the truth. And if describing people as dirtbags was simply a matter of using "shorthand", it still came off badly. Very badly. I'm sure you noticed that I wasn't the only "thin-skinned" person who took offense to it. And even though you don't care enough to get self-righteous you are still doing one heck of a job.

...I responded to the very last because that person seemed the least belligerent and then you jumped in to respond to that.

You think your opinion "happens to be the truth" but it's only that, an opinion. You don't know the people I know so you can't say whether I'm right about them (which is what my original messsage was based on, after all), and I don't know the ex-smokers you know so I can't say whether you're right about that, even if I wanted to (and I don't care enough to want to).

Anyway, the two longest posts I've made all day have been on this thread and I don't care to add a third essay. Take care.

72. I don't know what subways you are taking, Crankie,
but I'm a fellow NYer (and an ex smoker), and I've never noticed the smoking in the subway stairwells. But, then again, I also don't call smokers dirtbags. What a load of self-righteous garbage.

Call them damaging themselves and polluting the public air if you must, but calling them dirtbags speaks of their persona. (Not their hygeine, as you seem to insist.) You are not only insulting their habit, but you are insulting who they are. Maybe you don't think so or you don't care, and if you don't care, then neither do I. The real "dirtbags" are those who show no care for the feelings of those around them. Most smokers I know are caring enough to go outside or away from others to partake in their habit. Unfortunately, some people don't do the same with their chosen bad habits (speaking ill of others). I'd be much more comfortable if you took that type of judgement outside so that I didn't have to wallow in the stink of it.

75. I normally wait until after dinner on Friday to go visit my dad
(he has dementia and resides in a assisted living home) because there is less traffic, but today I changed the oil in the car and felt the need to go see him before dinner.

This time he knew me when he saw me (he never forgot my voice) and we put his coat on and went outside to enjoy a walk and a smoke. I lit our cigarettes, and we started to walk around the building. We were having great fun talking about the wonderful weather (50 degrees in December in Northern Illinois) and what a great day it was to be alive.

He suddenly started to complain about a sharp pain in his hip (about the top of his right rear jean pocket.) At first I didn't worry too much, I mean it was a pain in his ass after all. We went to the on-duty nurse and she looked for obvious problems and when she didn't find any, gave him some over-the-counter pain relievers. When the pills didn't help I decided to take him to the hospital just down the block.

To make a long story short he died in the waiting room at the hospital. It was quite shocking for everybody. The nurses and I only thought that he had a sore butt. The other patients thought that their problems was more important than a sore ass. But in less than 15 seconds he proved us all wrong.

I've drank enough to sleep for a while, and then I have to arrange his funeral. I just can't even believe that a pain in his butt could be fatal. Be thankful for every second with your loved ones because there are no guarantees about tomorrow.

You picked a rotten day to be an ass.

77. That's A Non-Sequitur
Edited on Sat Dec-16-06 05:56 AM by DemocratSinceBirth
Let me preface my remarks by saying I support Barack Obama and and am reading his book now. I also bought it for my neighbor for Christmas. Now that I got that out of the way...

I said I'm surprised and disappointed that someone as intelligent as Barack Obama smokes. Your response was to give me a picture of President Bu$h who presumably doesn't smoke.

intelligent
adj 1: having the capacity for thought and reason especially to a
high degree; "is there intelligent life in the
universe?"; "an intelligent question"
2: possessing sound knowledge; "well-informed readers"
3: exercising or showing good judgment; "healthy scepticism";
"a healthy fear of rattlesnakes"; "the healthy attitude of
French laws"; "healthy relations between labor and
management"; "an intelligent solution"; "a sound approach
to the problem";"sound advice"; "no reasonable explanation
for his decision"
4: endowed with the capacity to reason

I don't see your point.... You could have just as easier given me a picture of Homer Simpson or the patriachal figure from "Married With Children" whose name escapes me. They don't smoke. Or Trent "Fucking" Lott

There is abundant evidence that smoking creates health problems for yourself and the others around you. I am sad and disappointed that someone as intelligent as Barack Obama smokes and wishes he would stop. I also wish that all smokers stop.

86. Then let me explain:
You said you were surprised someone as smart as Obama smokes. I put up Dubya's picture because he's a health nut who doesn't smoke, and he's, as you know, quite stupid.

I didn't put up Al Bundy's (Married with Children) pic or Homer Simpson's pic for two reasons -- they're FICTIONAL characters. And who has done more damage -- Trent Lott or the Chimp himself?

Every smoker knows it's bad for you. Guess what? Lots of things are bad for you. Would you have the same reaction if Obama drank? Or is smoking the only unacceptable vice nowadays?

And by your logic, FDR wasn't too bright, either:

106. You Should Quit While You're Behind
The negative health effects of smoking were not widely known or known at all during FDR's era.

Part of being intelligent is exhibiting sound judgment. Smoking doesn't exhibit sound judgment imho nor in the minds of almost the entire medical and scientific community.

I also said I support Obama and think he's great and that I can see how people enjoy smoking for its liberating and relaxing effects.

In the scheme of thing it's a small vice or peccadillo but I remained surprised.

That's all.

107. Oh, please.
Even in FDR's day, the health effects of smoking should have been obvious, particularly to the smoker himself.

Eating fast food and drinking alcohol doesn't exhibit sound judgment in the medical community either, but people continue to harp on smoking for some reason.

If a person wishes to smoke that is their decision. I have no problem with that. If they smoke in public I have a problem with it...It seems to me most smokers are deliberately obtuse on this matter. I don't know anyone that wants to make them quit smoking only to quit smoking in public and they refuse to "get it".

28. I'm a major anti-smoker and I'd still vote for Obama
Not like he's out there publically puffing on a ciggie while doing speeches and campaign visits. This is nothing more than the media trying to vilify someone who has the potential to win the presidency (note - I have not decided who I'm supporting in 2008, personally I'd like to see him as VP first).

As someone who not only is an avowed anti-smoker but who also lost her father when I was just 14 (and he was around the age that Obama is now), I would hope that he quits for the sake of his children.

But as for him not being a good role-model, well hell compared to the repukes running this country....

45. My Concern Is Purely Selfish
He is, whether some people here like it or not, a rising star in the Party and seems to be fairly popular with 'swing' voters.

As things stand now, at a minimum he is probably the VP designate. Being relatively young, he would then be positioned for a very strong run in 2012 or 2016.

That said, the fact that he smokes changes his status IMHO from relatively young to not so young. He is, what, 46, around the age that smoking seems to make the first cull of those genetically susceptible. Then again, my Grandfather rolled his Velvet and lived into his 80's, but he was a farmer.

Unlike some here, I believe that we do not need the candidate with the best ideological resume, but the candidate who reasonably supports your values and has the best chance of winning (FDR, JFK, etc.).

The last six years should underscore the need to win. I want him around for the next couple of decades.

it doesn't bother me so as long as he doesn't turn out to be a nutjob. I won't vote for him though yet because he doesn't have enough experience. The man needs more time in federal government before I trust him with the presidency. Being politically inexperienced like Obama sadly is usually means relying on advisers(like Dubya) and that can often lead to being to close to certain special interests who have the ear of said advisers.

WASHINGTON -

We know from his autobiography Dreams from My Father, that he tried marijuana and cocaine in his wayward youth, a refreshingly straightforward and revealing contrast to President Bush, who dodged probing drug questions as a candidate, and President Bill Clinton, who claimed never to have inhaled.

I have only read about it on this board - I've never seen or heard it anywhere else.

But, if true....I love the guy, but it WOULD lessen my respect for him. It shows mental weakness. These aren't the days of FDR, when everyone smoked and most people didn't really know how bad it was and it is now VERY common knowledge, to say the least.

Honestly, if you can't or won't quit smoking for your family and your health...that says a lot about you.

I hardly know ANYONE who smokes, anymore. It's so rare here in L.A. and really considered to be an activity for uneducated, lower class people.

116. you'll notice if you read the post...
i didn't say it was MY opinion. it is generally the way people here think. I am sitting, at this very moment, in Calabasas, California, the first city in the nation to outlaw smoking OUTSIDE. Smokers are generally looked down upon here in much the same way that you might look down upon someone who poops on the sidewalk.

(although the mental weakness comment was my own! If you can't quit smoking, should you be leading the United States of America???)

at least Obama doesn't defend the behavior...

“I’m struggling with those. I’ve quit before. It’s one of those habits that creep up when you’re stressed and you have to shake it off. It’s not something I’m proud of.”
