... when I finally quit for good, cold turkey, after three tries (I'm smoke-free 20 years, and don't EVER wish for a coffin nail), I kept Q-tips in my office desk drawer and on the coffee table where my ashtray used to be.

Whenever I had that craving to drag on a filter, I stuck a Q-tip in my mouth, and inhaled through THAT (and, of course, held the Q-tip like a cig, to complete the obsessive-complusive gesture).

I didn't use any sort of patch or gum, so I did climb the walls for a while (and then there's the weight gain), but quitting was the best thing I ever did for myself.

Thank God for Q-tips!!

You used Q-tips, I used coffee stirrers I removed all the ash tray and when I went for a cigarette outo f habit thats what I got. I now from time to time chew on tooth picks.

The above will explain how the cold laser works. I recently had physical therapy for tear in my knee and they used cold laser therapy. I was a smoker since I was 15 now 50 and now it is 11 months since my last smoke. The first few days I kept drinking water at the urge and finally there was none. I stayed home for a few weeks from friends who smoked and then I had no problem. I watch them smoke now. I gained weight too but the Dr. says its better than smoking.

I believe it cost about two hundred dollars for them to laser your ears and nose. He hasn't smoked since, and it's been seven months for him.

I quit using Nicorette, and in March, it will be two years. Yeah!

As for Obama... smoking is still legal, so whatever..... He should quit, of course... but it doesn't make a difference to how I would vote if he is a smoker or not. It's silly to even care about this.

...mention something like smoking or SUVs or anything like that in a place like this and there will always be a flurry of "well I'm a smoker/an SUV driver and I'm not that way so none of the others are like that, either."

I was a smoker for about seven or eight years and I remember well the stink of smoke lingering in my clothes all day, the nicotine burned fingers, the dingy and discolored teeth (where I had always had white teeth before I took up the habit), and I was just a pack a day smoker...the heavier smokers I knew then and still know now were and/or are even worse. If you don't see that in yourself, well, remember that the stinky kid in school (I'm sure you had one) didn't know he stank, either.

It took quite a while for the orange burns on my fingers to go away once I quit, and even longer for my teeth to come back to the right shade. It's a person's choice if they want to be that way, but what I said was it's surprising to hear Barack Obama's name in connection with this because he seems bright-eyed, bushy-tailed and freshly scrubbed...which if you're honest you'll admit is not really the usual smoker's temperament/look. He's probably only some half pack or "social" smoker, anyway.

"Self-righteousness" has nothing to do with this and you might be throwing that in to make yourself feel better. I really don't care about what smokers do to themselves so long as they don't make everyone else have to partake in it. The unfortunate thing is, they often do. For example, I'm a New Yorker who rides the subway every day. These subway trains let us out underground and we walk up flights of stairs to get back out. These are narrow, enclosed, confined spaces, and there are very often smokers who don't even have the decency to wait until they get out into the street before they light up. So, everyone behind them has to breathe that in while we all slowly walk up the crowded flight of stairs. When someone is jonesing so bad that they don't even have the manners to wait an extra minute until they get out into the open street to light up and thus not bother the people around them quite as much with something that should only impact on their own health and hygiene, that's true addiction...and a true lack of consideration.

Anyway, it doesn't make me any more or less likely to vote for Obama. Good day to you.

P.S. I would define the more common "smoker's temperament" as someone not quite as uptight or perky as the goody twoshoes type, which I think Obama at least tried to project if he is not actually is. And the look is easy enough. You can see from the fingers, teeth, and clothing smell. Back when I was an active smoker, homeless strangers would come up to me to bum cigarettes all the time, and I wasn't in the act when they did...they could just tell I was a smoker. Now all they ask for is money.

75. I normally wait until after dinner on Friday to go visit my dad

(he has dementia and resides in a assisted living home) because there is less traffic, but today I changed the oil in the car and felt the need to go see him before dinner.

This time he knew me when he saw me (he never forgot my voice) and we put his coat on and went outside to enjoy a walk and a smoke. I lit our cigarettes, and we started to walk around the building. We were having great fun talking about the wonderful weather (50 degrees in December in Northern Illinois) and what a great day it was to be alive.

He suddenly started to complain about a sharp pain in his hip (about the top of his right rear jean pocket.) At first I didn't worry too much, I mean it was a pain in his ass after all. We went to the on-duty nurse and she looked for obvious problems and when she didn't find any, gave him some over-the-counter pain relievers. When the pills didn't help I decided to take him to the hospital just down the block.

To make a long story short he died in the waiting room at the hospital. It was quite shocking for everybody. The nurses and I only thought that he had a sore butt. The other patients thought that their problems was more important than a sore ass. But in less than 15 seconds he proved us all wrong.

I've drank enough to sleep for a while, and then I have to arrange his funeral. I just can't even believe that a pain in his butt could be fatal. Be thankful for every second with your loved ones because there are no guarantees about tomorrow.

45. My Concern Is Purely Selfish

He is, whether some people here like it or not, a rising star in the Party and seems to be fairly popular with 'swing' voters.

As things stand now, at a minimum he is probably the VP designate. Being relatively young, he would then be positioned for a very strong run in 2012 or 2016.

That said, the fact that he smokes changes his status IMHO from relatively young to not so young. He is, what, 46, around the age that smoking seems to make the first cull of those genetically susceptible. Then again, my Grandfather rolled his Velvet and lived into his 80's, but he was a farmer.

Unlike some here, I believe that we do not need the candidate with the best ideological resume, but the candidate who reasonably supports your values and has the best chance of winning (FDR, JFK, etc.).

The last six years should underscore the need to win. I want him around for the next couple of decades.

I have only read about it on this board - I've never seen or heard it anywhere else.

But, if true....I love the guy, but it WOULD lessen my respect for him. It shows mental weakness. These aren't the days of FDR, when everyone smoked and most people didn't really know how bad it was and it is now VERY common knowledge, to say the least.

Honestly, if you can't or won't quit smoking for your family and your health...that says a lot about you.

I hardly know ANYONE who smokes, anymore. It's so rare here in L.A. and really considered to be an activity for uneducated, lower class people.

i didn't say it was MY opinion. it is generally the way people here think. I am sitting, at this very moment, in Calabasas, California, the first city in the nation to outlaw smoking OUTSIDE. Smokers are generally looked down upon here in much the same way that you might look down upon someone who poops on the sidewalk.

(although the mental weakness comment was my own! If you can't quit smoking, should you be leading the United States of America???)
