80 percent majority decries persecution by Jews, athiests, ACLU

Seems up here in the dark, rainy Pacific Northwest, we've got a little stink on our hands that's making national news, especially among those phony "War On Christmas" types who can never keep their facts, or religions, straight.

You see, over at Sea-Tac International Hyphenated Airport, they put up the usual, you know, Christmas trees. And some rabbi threatened to sue if they didn't also put up a display of a Menorah to commemorate Hanukkah. Just like they do at the City of Seattle and any number of other government-owned properties in the region. So what did the Hyphenated Airport brain trust do? Against the pleadings of the rabbi and his lawyer, the airport took the trees down instead.

And then, if you'll pardon the Satanic reference, all Hell broke loose. That includes Bill O'Reilly, pronged tail and all.

Yeah, Christians have attacked Christmas. So have capitalist greed, insane consumerism, and the seeming lack of familiarity of many Christians with the basic tenets of their namesake, aka The Prince of Peace. Don't believe me? Try combining, with a straight face, Bill O'Reilly's name with any of the following phrases: Forgiveness. Turning the Other Cheek. The Meek Shall Inherit the Earth. Go ahead. I double-dare you. Lose and you have to watch his show, and vice versa: if you have to watch his show, you lose.

And so we get tempests in treepots like this year's airport fiasco. The reports are already swirling wildly that the rabbi demanded the trees be removed (he didn't), that the Jews and the godless secularists at the ACLU are in cahoots (we should be so lucky), and that the liberals in Hollywood, hearing the word "war," are scouting for a movie treatment (probably true). This preposterous nonsense is sort of like the run-up to the Iraq War, and, oddly enough, is being propagated by many of the same people. It's fiction, based sorta loosely on what might once have been a fact, being harnessed in the service of a preordained and flatly ridiculous conclusion.

It's a bunch of rich white guys, the folks screwing 90 percent of America, trying to create a fake controversy so they can stand with (as opposed to on) the little folks. What war on a holiday? By whom? How can the 80 percent of this country that calls itself Christian be under serious attack, let alone the threat of annihilation, by anyone, unless it's some idiot who talks to and hears from God constantly and has his finger on the nuclear button?

2. I think it might shock these "Christians"

that non-Christians in the US really don't pay all that much attention to their holiday. If a church or an individual want to put out lights and religious figures, that's fine-I look on them as nice decorations or art, much like the lights at Halloween or Duvali. I don't watch much TV, so it is easy to ignore "specials"; the only thing that gets me down is having to listen to yukky "Christmas" songs in stores-though I love classical music based carols. But really, they can do what they want to do--just leave me alone.

Except that I find it annoying to have so many shoppers clogging the stores (the rare occasions that I go into any other than grocery stores), and to find pretty much everything shut on Xmas and New Year's.

But the bargain-priced turkeys are nice, even if I don't always trust how they were raised.

3. Some of us love holidays

The office where I worked for 25 years loved celebrating holidays, especially with food. We celebrated Christmas, Thanksgiving, Cinco de Mayo, Fourth of July, Juneteenth, whatever rolled around. It was a great excuse to eat, and laugh, and have a good time. We didn't discriminate, either. We celebrated everything, and nobody ever complained, unless they were gaining too much weight.

Best kept secret regarding librarians: they are some of the most adventurous cooks around. If you ever get invited to a holiday, birthday, farewell, retirement party put on by librarians, don't pass it up. It's like cooking is their other avocation.

But if I ever get invited to a party given by librarians, I'll be sure to go. We had some really, really good cooks in our office, too. We also celebrated birthdays, and had farewell and retirement parties.

If you are ignorant of US History its not my fault

The Constitution, the Bill of Rights or American Legal Tradition has no reference to God, any God.

Our foreign affairs are also set on SECULAR PRINCIPLES and the SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE.

You have the First Amendment, not dictated by God, but coming out of the pen of PEOPLE, mere mortals, who were cognizant of what happened in Europe during the 100 years war.

What is more, the Treaty of Tripoli made it plain that THIS IS A SECULAR NATION.

rather than allow anyone else their cultural holiday participation. Doesn't that just say it all?

And what a wonderful way to honor Jesus. Or at least what they have turned Jesus into over the course of 2000 years.

I think this episode puts the lie to the typical excuse about how they don't want to ostracize anyone OUT, they just want to do their own thing, whether it is public school prayer or nativity scenes or ten commandments in courtrooms.

When you'd shut down the whole show rather than let anybody else play a part... Well, it doesn't get much clearer than that about your real motivations.
