1. And here's the background story for those who didn't hear about it:
http://www.detnews.com/2005/nation/0509/09/nat4-309467.htm

Al Gore helped airlift some 270 Katrina evacuees on two private charters from New Orleans, acting at the urging of a doctor who saved the life of the former vice president's son.

Gore criticized the Bush administration's slow response to Katrina in a speech Friday in San Francisco, but refused to be interviewed about the mercy missions he financed and flew on Sept. 3 and 4.

However, Dr. Anderson Spickard, who is Gore's personal physician and accompanied him on the flights, said: "Gore told me he wanted to do this because like all of us he wanted to seize the opportunity to do what one guy can do, given the assets that he has."

An account of the flights was posted this week on a Democratic Party Web page. It was written by Greg Simon, president of the Washington-based activist group FasterCures. Simon, who helped put together the mission, also declined an interview.

3. I remember that!
Bit different from this:

But..but I thought Al was the wooden, unlikeable person and this guy was someone with a heart who everyone wants to have a beer with :eyes:.

8. yes, and isn't Al the guy who's constantly exaggerating his accomplishments
.... and taking credit for other people's work? Or so his opponents said.

Apparently he was in the middle of working on "An Inconvenient Truth" when he told the filmmakers that he had something to do, and would be back in a few days. Turns out he and his son were on this rescue mission to New Orleans. Al didn't want any media attention, and he didn't even talk about his own experiences during this effort, in the film.

11. Pretty pathetic of Bush. Both Gore and Kerry did quiet missions to Katrina victims
while the presscorps was still drooling over Bush and McCain's straightshooter 'image' with lots of cake and merriment.

6. This was a good deed done the right way. Done because it was
the right thing to do and because you had the means to do it, not for the recognition it would bring.

7. Well, it's not a picture of him "cutting brush," showing off stupid little cowboy boots...
...or making an ass of himself in front of world leaders, but I guess a pic of him actually helping out Katrina survivors will just have to do. :sarcasm:
