Saw a chilling and horrifying movie last night

I couldn't sleep and turned on the tele, a movie called Casualties of War was on. Big name stars like Michael J. Fox and Sean Penn. Film is set in Vietnam where a group of soldiers led by Penn abduct a young Vietnamese girl and proceed to rape and kill her. Fox is disgusted but can't do anything to save her.

It was horrifying. All I could think of was the little girl that was raped in Iraq, and all the countless other times that this scenario has taken place. Then there's the incident with the men making the Iraqi kids chase their truck for a bottle of water, and the incident where the troops are having kids sing "fuck Iraq".

Iraq is identical to Vietnam in that it is an illegal war based on lies. I feel that under those circumstances these sorts of criminal activites are going to abound.

This is madness. Its clear that Iraq has been lost since the moment the first bomb was dropped. Bring the troops home now. We are destroying a country and destroying the well being of every person who is participating in this crime.

2. I know this is not PC

but I have gradually come to the conclusion that I cannot ever agree to the "support the troops" sentiments on any level, in an illegal war.

3. I went to a christmas concert last night

at my old high school because my wife was recording it for a radio station she works for. As soon as we got in we were greeted by the yellow ribbon table and a pushy young man thrusting one into my face asking me if I'd like to buy a ribbon to support our troops. I simply said, "If you have one that says bring them home i'll buy several", already knowing the answer I just kept walking.

6. "Support the troops" is an oversimplification akin to "Support the US"

Is the Bush administration the United States?

The people who can't make any distinction between the two shouldn't be allowed to vote.

4. I thought about that movie CONTINUALLY in the run-up to the Iraq fiasco

and in the years since. It was and is very disturbing and telling.

I especially remembered how the U.S. public met the movie with a yawn for the most part. Too busy buy videos of "Top Gun," I guess. Whee! War is cool!

5. It came out in 1989

so it was long enough after Vietnam and before Iraq. I'm glad AMC showed it because I missed it when it was released.In the context of Iraq it is an important film.

8. Yes, I saw it in 1989. Vietnam was boring and nothing like THIS could ever happen

again. (facetiousness)

I thought it was very interesting that AMC was showing it when I saw it on the schedule last night.
