It seems that more Americans would rather watch reality television than participate in our democratic process. More people need to keep up with what our elected representatives do in our name. Maybe Randy, Paula and Simon could do a better job leading our country. Just imagine them saying "Dude, you made it. You're going to Washington!"

1. I watched American Idol and not the SOTU |
|
I don't equate watching the State of the Union to keeping up with what our representatives do. I turned the SOTU on for about 5 seconds and just couldn't handle it...
but that does give me an idea...have Bush do his speech on the American Idol stage with Randy, Paula and Simon reacting to the speech along the way as they do. Rolling their eyes, turning around and laughing....
Now that's something I'd watch.

I finished American Idol on slight delay from the DVR so I can skip over the commercials and filler, and then flipped onto the SOTU and just a few seconds of it made me sick enough to turn the TV off.
I don't need to watch his speech to know I don't like him, or his policies. They always hit the key points afterwards and I can read about it later, without having to watch him mangle the language and sneer at people.

12. I agree with your sentiment |

I couldn't stand Reagan's policies, and I would argue back at the TV whenever he gave speeches, but I didn't have a physical reaction to seeing him speak on TV like I do with Bush. It's weird.

We need to handle it. We need to call them out on every lie they tell. We never should turn a blind eye. This group currently in power is as dangerous as we have seen in decades. Although they are thoroughly despicable, we must participate. In order to enact change, we must know from what we're changing and how to communicate that change to people who may not be aware of a need for change.
Be strong. It's not that hard. We will win again.

The SOTU address came on AFTER American Idol.
If you're talking ratings, however, I think it's important to note that in any given year, regardless of who is president, SOTU watchers are normally supporters and political junkies. The fact that so many Americans do NOT watch is a factor of how little relevant and important information is conveyed through the state of the union address. Watching a propaganda speech by the boy who would be king is not participating "in our democratic process" or keeping up with "what our elected representatives do in our name."
Most Americans say Why Bother? And frankly, there's not a good answer for that.

4. I'd rather watch American Idol |

I would also say that I'm better informed than most of the people who did watch the SOTU.

7. The SOTU is irrelevant |

just like American Idol.
But at least AI is fun and makes you laugh. The SOTU makes you cry.
Most Americans know that the SOTU is total pagentry...sound and fury symbolizing nothing.

8. I didn't watch either, but I have more confidence that American Idol is |
|
real than I do in Bush and anything he says.
I trust their voting more than I trust our general elections!

and combines it. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0465142/I saw the trailer in the cinema. It looked like a true "republican film."

Definately looks like a combo but I don't know about the republican film aspect. Could go either way.

13. Just the promo looked like it was enough to make one hurl |
|
It just looked like "let's take the worst stupid and tacky show from the past few years and combine it with a 'misunderstoond president who is out-of touch'.
Just looked BAAAAAD. I wasn't the only one in the theater who thought so...

14. It's just the last part |

Where Hugh Grant's character compliments the "president" who just munches on his snack with a blank look on his face and replies "Cheeto?" while offering one. It sort of makes "The President" who is obviously Bush, out to be a right moron.

Screw the SOTU, it's bullshit anyway.
I Can think of MUCH better things to do than sitting around watching the ramblings of Chimpy McCokespoon on the tele....
