Bush Impeachment: Go for the Field goal

Recent calls for George Bush’s impeachment for his transgressions against the Constitution, the rule of law, and the citizens of the United States, have encountered opposition even from those who, while in agreement with the legal arguments, believe it’s futile to go down this path because of the enormous odds against success.

However, it seems increasingly likely that once Bush becomes a private citizen he will face the wrath of the International Criminal Court. According to the Geneva Convention on warfare, the use of fraud in establishing a pretext for invasion of a sovereign nation constitutes war crimes if deaths are involved. It’s not hard to imagine Bush unable to leave the U.S. fearing arrest by agents of the ICC, forever barricaded behind razor wire in his Crawford, Texas ranch.

He has zero curiousity about other cultures. He rarely traveled abroad before becoming president despite the fact that he was a rich kid who could have had he wanted to. And even if he did there's no way in hell the ICC would arrest a former president of the United States. No country that * would travel to would allow it, nor would any likely US president, Democratic or Republican.

This is a silly argument. Congress should do its job and investigate this. That's what should happen. That won't happen unless the Dems retake the Congress in 2006. And given the lack of competitive districts, that's probably unlikely too. Dems better win state Houses and control redistricting if they want to regain power.

7. Even the threat of impeachment is useful.

Although those who continue to support a president who has proven his incompetence hold that impeachment is meant for dealing with the personal peccadilloes of their adversaries, it is our only legal constitutional recourse to confront a president who defies the laws that define our freedom. It is a painful and ultimately messy process, but it now appears to be our best hope of at least reining in a delusional leader who is beyond the influence of reason and the will of the people. Make it your New Year’s resolution to make the impending impeachment of Bush and Cheney the biggest story of 2006 and the defining event of 2007.

8. But what if Americans help him get captured?

Once he becomes a private citizen (and hopefully that will be soon), I would think it very patriotic to covertly help out the ICC in locating Bush, then arresting and smuggling him out of the country. I would salute anyone who helped out in that effort.

Used to be Presidents got Secret Service Protection for life, but the law was changed and now they get it only for 10 years after leaving office.

Even assuming Bush is not impeached, he's out of office Jan 2009. Ten years after that, Secret Service goes bye-bye and he becomes a permanent recluse in Crawford.
