Bush Says He Has More "Knowledge" Than Anyone Advising Him
Bush's reaction alarms Iraq panelist
President is still seeking advice on report, aides say
By Michael Kranish, Globe Staff | December 15, 2006

WASHINGTON -- Iraq Study Group member Leon E. Panetta believed that his panel's unanimous bipartisan recommendations about a new way forward in Iraq would give President Bush the political cover needed for a dramatic policy shift. So the former chief of staff to President Clinton has watched with alarm as Bush this week signaled that he may reject suggestions about diplomacy and withdrawing most US troops from Iraq by 2008.

Bush has even criticized the idea that the group was providing a "graceful exit" from the war -- which is what Panetta and other panel members figured Bush most wanted.

"I think he has been trapped by his own rhetoric," Panetta said in a telephone interview from his California office. Referring to a recent poll suggesting that 70 percent of those surveyed disapprove of Bush's handling of the war, Panetta said, "His ratings are so low now that he has got to do something to pull this country together."

But to those who know Bush best, the president's approach is not surprising. Bush's former chief of staff, Andrew H. Card Jr. , who was by Bush's side as he formulated many of his key decisions on the war, said Bush hears many opinions and thus believes that "his knowledge is more complete than anyone who is advising him."

As compartmentalized and fragmented as he's made the federal gov't., I can actually believe that he (or actually Cheney, Rove & Pearle Co. llc.) may indeed have the only view to the larger picture.

It's that very premise that worries me even more-- that they are preventing lower level agencies from getting relevent information, forcing those agencies to rely on incomplete or even erroneous inforamtion leading to greater casualties and a continuation of the conflict past the neccesary point.

Virtually every department in the federal govt. has long been known for NIH (not invented here) syndrome. no bureaucrat wants to let "someone else" get any credit for anything so they just pretend anything new doesn't exist , unless orders come down from the top.

39. There was an almost absolute sense of cooperation
There was an almost absolute sense of cooperation between federal (and even state agencies) during WWII (Joseph Persico, 'Roosevelt's Secret War')

Prior to DHS, we could rest easy knowing that if there was a natural disaster, federal agencies would and could work together in oder to assist the victims.

I know quite a few people in various agencies in the fed. I'm just kinda repeating what I've heard from them. Admittedly, I'm no expert... I doubt any of us are.

52. I think we ought to have 3 co-Presidents, one representing each major political party....

You'd have your right-wing co-President, your left-wing co-President and of course the progressive party co-President.

And in important split decisions, the 2 would overrule the 1.

I think I'd like that arrangement.

24. What a simple-minded and bassackwords view...
the man seriously thinks that because hears the views of many that that somehow increases his knowledge exponentially, but that all those people who's opinions he has heard are somehow living in a little box with no access to any other information than what they think of in their own minds. :wtf: :silly: As though he is some sort of grand sponge of knowledge and everyone else are just the little droplets of water that soak into the sponge.

The man is so completely delusional and incompetent and the most frightening thing is how he really believes himself to be some supreme entity with infinite wisdom. He believes that, even though millions upon millions of people are screaming about how wrong he is, in his mind they all just don't have the "KNOWLEDGE" and grand wisdom that he has, so therefore he should just do whatever he thinks. It's insane and utterly terrifying. :scared:

That's a very different, and far weaker, claim.

69. "He's got to do something to pull this country together."
Edited on Sat Dec-16-06 02:43 PM by Marr
The country already *is* together. Most everybody hates him and his stupid fraud of a war.

A tiny clique of Beltway insiders being out of touch with the general public does not qualify as "national division".

Someone coined that apt phrase.

It's no wonder many of us are filled with despair when contemplating the future of the world.

The intelligence was faulty, not manipulated, they say. "While it is perfectly legitimate to criticize my decisions or the conduct of the war," the president declared, "it is irresponsible to re-write the history of how the war began."

Re-writing history may be wrong, but reviewing it is instructive. The record shows that Bush and Cheney's claims that they were duped by bad intelligence are disingenuous.
