I posted a while ago asking if people were concerned about terror |
|
Attacks in america and I got the impression from those who responded that they were not concerned .
Don't you feel we are much more hated and do have more to worry about then before bush unleasted the destruction in the middle east .
I don't use a tinfoil hat . but I do think we are more at risk as well as the UK .

1. The people I've talked to from other countries |
|
do make a distinction between our government and the American people. I think we are at risk from terror attacks, but that they will, more likely, come from home-grown winguts than people from overseas.

I don't spend all day, every day thinking about it but I think it's going to happen. I also get the impression that some at DU are not concerned--or at least they say they aren't. I get a bit annoyed when I see some DUer's concern dismissed as falling for the Bush adminstrations "fearmongering". Bush adminstratiion fearmongering aside, I think things are much worse these days and I believe another attack of one kind or another is inevitable. I just hope we are more prepared for it than we were for 9/11.

5. We're probably more at risk, but that's still a tiny risk for individuals. |
|
Any individual is more likely to die of any number of things than of terrorism. So yeah, it could happen, will probably happen, but a big plane will probably crash next year, too.
There's always a chance some lunatic will do something incredibly bad and destructive, like destroy a whole city. But again, can you worry more about that than about hurricanes?

6. It's not just about motive or numbers |
|
You have to consider how many people actually have the finances, connections and capability to carry out a major attack on Western soil.
IMO, most successful major attacks have some kind of state support or preceived benefit to the (US or UK) state, therefore I guess that most are helped or allowed to happen.
That doesn't rule out lone nutters or more attacks abroad (on tourists, embassies etc).

7. I wouldn't say that I'm not concerned ... |
|
Sadly it's a fact of life in this world; there sre people that wish to do others harm based on political or philosphical beliefs.
However, it's not at the top of my list of worries.

9. Oh I am sure we will have more. We have had them for years. |
|
Can we list any country that has not had them? It is a way the weak always go for it. The better guns/bombs they can get, they will use just to keep up with what they feel they are fighting.

I have gotten the impression at times that people posting here are suspicious of alerts for attacks. I myself am suspicious, I do not trust Washington and believe that Bush has milked 9/11 to scare as many Americans as he can. I do not think we are more at risk however. How much more at risk can we get when bin Laden declared jihad, Death to America is still free AND our leader is not that concerned about him. (unless it's election time) We are more hated in the world but when you wish someone or a whole country death, you can't be more hated by them. I do think and believe as well that we are in great danger. Danger because of the actions of the current administration and their policies. Danger because there are terrorists who are probably lurking within our borders, danger because there has been no meaningful security measures taken regarding border security or port security. I do know that there are hundreds of citizens doing an impossible job of trying 24 hours a day to protect us from an evil that has no real definition. But as so many others believe, I don't buy all the politically motivated terror alerts that come down the pike.

11. Of course we are at increased risk now |
|
But still it is not a major problem. The only thing to go chicken little about is loose nukes, which could cause serious damage.

12. I'm really not that concerned at all |
|
We're a pretty open society. If terrorists really wanted to hit us, it wouldn't be that hard for them to do so. Anyone could strap on a dynamite backpack and blow themselves to bits in any crowded downtown corridor or shopping center. Wouldn't be hard to pack a car full of explosives and detonate it. The mere fact that we haven't seen this sort of activity - not even one single incident tells me that we really don't have much to be concerned about. The people that Americans are so damned afraid of are more concerned with protecting their homelands than travelling thousands of miles to our country to kill us.

13. I know there are many other ways to go |
|
I do not think about this daily or do I buy into terror alerts .
I do however think it is likely at some point whether it is allowed as I feel 9/11 was or an actual attack .
I am not concerned I will be personally attacked not that I live in a safe zone it is just that if it happens it happens and if I am involved to meet my end this way there is nothing I can do about that . So worrying won't help .
I feel it is more likely now days since america has pushed the envelope way to far .

14. Nope. More concerned about poor air quality... |
|
rising rent costs and the fact that my local grocery store seems to be increasing their prices by 25 cents every 6 months. I'm moderately concerned about getting to the gym 4 days a week. I have to finish a paper, and that's bothering me.
I don't think I have it in me to be worried about terra.

The "terra. Terra, TERRA" frenzy the BushCo propaganda machine is directing at all of us is sooo terribly WRONG!!!
If we are attacked again, (and we might well be), the chance of any particular person being affected directly is as remote as winning the lottery or being struck by lightning.
Other countries are being attacked every day, (Israel is one example), and life still goes on.
This is the reality of the modern world. Our own government tries to cow us with the threat of a terrorist attack in order to do Anything they like , strip any of our freedoms they care to ,and make us thank them for it.
All of the people Must wake up and re-examine their priorities.
The most destructive thing that can happen is to allow unreasoning Fear to grip us, to just run in circles (When in worry, fear and doubt/Run in circles, scream and shout)
Folks, we are ALL better than that!

16. The media and many people exaggerate it way out of proportion |
|
There is always a risk, and our interference in Afghanistan and Iraq have probably increased the risk, but it is still small. Talk to the kook-aid drinkers and they have it out of proportion, like it is as likely to happen as not, or that "our way of life" is really in the balance. Even they aren't dumb enough to believe that. It's a cover for a racism delighted to finally have an "acceptable" outlet.
But the opportunity and the extremism it takes to launch an attack is rare.
