War on xmas - my correspondence with a RW columnist
In a weekly rag that covers some Philly suburbs, a wing-nut columnist wrote an obnoxious piece on the so-called war on christmas.

http://www.thetimeschronicle.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=17583717&BRD=1306&PAG=461&dept_id=581781&rfi=6

I wrote the following letter and sent along the poem (Twas some weeks before Christmas) posted here on DU a little while ago.

********

Mr. Taylor,

Your column on the so-called 'war on christmas' did a great job of laying
out exactly why it is such a phony issue that the radical right has
gloamed onto to continue your fight against progress in the United States.
You are losing support for political issues so you have turned to the
'culture wars' to rally your base.

You even trot out the disavowment of prejudice by stating that you have
acquaintenances who celebrate holidays other than xmas. How noble of you.
As a member of one of these out-groups, I clearly remember the
indoctrination of my youth where we were all made to celebrate xmas in
public school.

You should know that most of us "others" really do not mind hearing the
occasional "Merry Christmas" or seeing trees decorated for Santa's visit.
Where you and your ilk have erred is in pushing too far and trying to
return America to the good ol' days when only the majority group had
rights and respect. In playing the victim though you are the overwhelming
majority in this country, your crocodile tears of alleged discrimination
do not hold up to objective scrutiny.

I give you a christmas present - the following poem that speaks the truth
about your plight.

Tom Wolf

Teddy-boy wrote back to me...

I knew this would feret out the nut fringe, I just never suspected you'd
surface so quickly. Stuff your stupid poem.
Merry Christmas,
Ted Taylor

2. They spend their time hating and finding ways to be martyrs
Its such a shame that they do everything to take advantage of living in the land of the free but they don't seem to enjoy it. There is no fucking war on Christmas. Its a fake battle designed to victimize those who think they would be happier without constitutional liberties. They are so complex and yet so disgustingly simple. I'm the nut fringe, I know the constitution trumps any religious document in this country. Nut fringe indeed.

7. Sent this comment to the online comment form:
"Its a real shame that Mr. Taylor is so ignorant. He doesn't seem to realize that when you say "Happy Holidays" it is to show respect to other people. Apparently Mr. Taylor doesn't respect his fellow Americans enough to alter his speech. Its very sad that he would choose, of his own free will, to cause conflict on purpose over this issue, when Americans have so many real issues facing us due to conservatives like him. I hope someday he becomes a little more open-minded about the diverse society we live in today, and focusses on real issues that people care about, instead of the inanity of how we verbalize a holiday greeting."

8. This was cute in Ted's letter...
"according to statistics, about 90 percent of the U.S. population is Christian"

Oh according to statistics, you say? And did you know that according to arithmetic, 1+1=2?

I'm so glad he cited his source.

9. This is what kills me
Mr. Idiot Taylor goes into a store and complains to the management that they have a menorah, but no Christmas decorations.

WHAT THE FUCK BUSINESS IS IT OF HIS WHAT THE STORE PUTS UP FOR DECORATIONS?! Has he now assumed control of this store? Is he now the manager? so, because the store decides to put up a decoration for a holiday he doesn't follow, now they are declaring 'war' on Christmas? SERIOUSLY? Are we all supposed to talk to Mr. Idiot Taylor only in words that he chooses? IS he in charge of what we say now, so that if he hears us say words he doesn't agree with, we are now trying to destroy America?

I don't have a problem finding cards and things that say Merry Christmas. I think he's making stuff up just so he can gripe and try to take over everyone's right to do what they want for the holidays.
