I just watched "An Inconvenient Truth" - now I have to persuade my Republican brother to watch it
That won't be easy. His pre-teen son is a little more liberal, though, so I might persuade him to persuade my brother.

Watching An Inconvenient Truth has convinced me that I need to do even more to help the environment. There are things we can all do - like using compact fluorescent lights. That's a pretty simple solution that can make a big difference. My personal bugaboo is recyling and composting - I've been trying and failing. But I need to try harder. Al Gore makes it pretty clear that if we don't act, the future of the world is at stake.

What the heck will the temperature of the world be 50 years from now if nothing is done about global warming? What will happen to all the people who are displaced because of rising sea levels? What about those in areas that will experience extreme drought? This could be hugely disruptive.

And the 14 or so predicted hurricaines for next year has me :scared:. What will hurricaines become if global warming continues escalating? Cat 10? No more fish in the oceans, just giant jellyfish? No more trees, just wildfires?

1. Nail his foot to the floor
He'll thank you sooner or later. :)

3. My brother is pretty cool and I love him, but he has a hard head.
Sometimes it's hard to pound stuff in. I feel like :banghead:. But I keep trying.

2. Ask him if always lets Rush and O'Reilly tell him what to read and watch.
They don't want him to see it because they are afraid of the public knowing the truth.

4. He doesn't listen to Rush or watch O'Reilly. One point in his
favor. But he's a corporatist, and sometimes that's worse. :banghead: He's a really smart guy. But he can be blind about some things.

5. Tell him it's the Paris Hilton sex tape
then feign embarrassment when Gore comes on: "Oh crap. The video place must've switched tapes on me!" :-)

7. Yes, but he'd look at me pretty strange if I gave him a sex tape.
I'm his sister. And our family is overly moral (hence his Republican status).

I think it would shock him more if I gave him a Paris Hilton sex tape than if I forced him to watch Al Gore at gunpoint. LOL!

6. Show it to his son
That is what I did with my 16 yo niece from a republican family, although her parents won't take the time to watch it. My niece told me later that she keeps thinking about the movie.

8. That's what I'm thinking.
My nephew raised the issue of overpopulation out of the blue the last time I was at his house, so I'm thinking he's fertile ground for global warming, if you know what I mean.

I can get my nephew to watch it, then get HIM to nag my brother into watching it.

17. I also took her to see "Bobby"
It's a great way to connect with them, to spend time discussing important issues and hopefully, plant the liberal seed in her brain. I'm hoping to take her, her little sister and her Mom to "Happy Feet" this weekend.

9. My brother's tactic with his RW friends is to
Take the movie, a six pack of beer and order a pizza. He gotten dozens of his RW friends to sit through both "Fahrenheit 9/11" and "Outfoxed" in the past couple of years by doing this. He's also gotten quite a number of converts.

10. My brother is a pretty smart guy, so I'm hoping that if he
watches the movie and spends some time thinking about it, he'll get it.

The problem is he's a corporate honcho, so he gets brainwashed from the "other" side all the time, too.

Not to mention that principle Al Gore talked about - when your salary depends on being unconvinced, you're not going to be convinced.

But I still have hope for my brother - those corprocrats haven't broken him yet!

15. I applaud your efforts
I hope you get him to watch. At least you're doing something to educate others. I think that's what is great. Keep up the good work.

11. I ended up with about 6 extra CFLs and have given them away to
family members with a little lecture that if every household changed the 3 most used bulbs in their homes how much power it would save

12. I love CFLs. I like the fact that they save energy, and I also
like the fact that I almost never have to change them. Two cool things in one!

CFLs are something I might be able to persuade my brother to try. He has a lot of recessed lighting in his house, though. Not sure if there's a CFL that can be used in those type.

13. they can't be used on dimmer switches but otherwise they work fine
anywhere with the new coiled style that is close to the actual size of the old style bulbs
