Shouldn't folks be petitioning certain state legislatures?

I was very intrigued this week when I read that different states have different laws on the books, for replacing a Senator who resigns or passes away. Of course, now we know that some states require their Governor to choose someone of the same party as the Senator they need to replace. Some states allow the Governor to choose anyone they want.

For those states that allow the Governor to choose anyone they desire, I think the folks living in those states should be petitioning their state legislature to change that law, to require the Governor to choose someone of the same party as the Senator that needs to be replaced.

IMO, it's just common sense. If the people have gone to the polls and said 'this is the person I want in the Senate," and then that person needs to be replaced, then the Governor should by law give the people what they voted for, by naming someone from the same party.

In our state, Hawaii, the governor has to appoint someone from the same party of the senator that needs to be replaced, however recent history shows that our red guv, while complying with the law, appointed a DINO or "red lite" to the seat... thankfully that only lasted until the primary election when the people spoke and put a Dem of their choice in that seat...

again.. I agree with you.. folks should be aware of the rules of secession in their respective states and actively begin an effort to change the law...

2. I really do hope people will take the time

To find out what the law is in their particular state, and if it needs to be changed, contact their state legislature. This really needs to be a huge issue.

It's not about either party, IMO. It's about the voters. The voters are entitled to get what they went to the polls and voted for. And principle should be reflected when Governors must appoint someone to replace a Senator.

Time will only tell how this goes, I guess...
