Arnold Grossman, author of "One Nation Under Guns - An Essay on An American Epidemic," argues the pro-gun control case while David Kopel, co-editor of "Gun Control and Gun Rights: A Reader and Guide" speaks for the opposing side. The debate is moderated by Cnythia Hessin, executive producer of Rocky Mountain PBS.

David Kopel is Research Director at the Independence Institute in Golden, Colorado. Arnold Grossman co-founded SAFE Colorado, a bipartisan anti-gun violence group, in 2000, following the Columbine school shootings. Mr. Grossman co-authored "1998" with former Colorado governor Richard Lamm.

Gene Epstein

Journalist Gene Epstein discusses his new book, "Econospinning," at a New York City Barnes & Noble. In his talk, Mr. Epstein makes the point that his fellow journalists frequently misrepresent or misinterpret economic data -- shaping data to fit a preexisting story rather than shaping their story around the data. Mr. Epstein says this behavior is driven by laziness and the desire to tell a compelling story, rather than by ideology. Among the journalists he critcizes are Lou Dobbs, Paul Krugman, and Steven Levitt.

Gene Epstein is the Economics Editor of Barron's and writes the column "Economic Beat." He was previously a senior economist at the New York Stock Exchange and has taught economics at St. John's University and the City University of New York.

He proposes ideas that will advance national security policy into the 21st century.

Since 2004, the Intercollegiate Studies Institute has presented the Henry Paolucci/Walter Bagehot Book Award to authors in recognition of their scholarly achievements. This year’s winner was William Daugherty, author of "Executive Secrets: Covert Action and the Presidency." Mr. Daugherty received a $5,000 cash award and was given an opportunity to lecture about his book, which looks at the use of covert actions by U.S. presidents since 1947. Mark Bowden, who wrote the forward to the book, makes opening remarks. This event was hosted by the Intercollegiate Studies Institute based in Wilmington, Delaware.

William Daugherty is a professor of criminal justice and political science at Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah, Georgia. Before joining the AASU faculty, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was an officer with the Central Intelligence Agency at the U.S. embassy in Tehran, Iran. He was one of fifty-two Americans held hostage for 444 days in Iran between 1979 and 1980 and is the author of "In the Shadow of the Ayatollah: A CIA Hostage in Iran." Mark Bowden is a journalist and adjunct professor at Loyola College in Maryland. He is the author of "Black Hawk Down," "Killing Pablo," and "Guests of the Ayatollah: The First Battle in America's War with Militant Islam."

At a recent meeting of the American Jewish Committee's Institute for Analysis of Global Security in Washington, DC, Edwin Black describes how the automotive and petroleum industries have encouraged oil dependence. Mr. Black begins by telling his audience that people have been trying to monopolize resources -- wood, water, electricity, etc. -- since the beginning of human history. He then explains that the first battery-powered car was developed in the 1890s, but its production was undermined by advocates of the internal combustion engine. Edwin Black concludes his talk by weighing in on the feasability of alternative energy sources such as corn & sugar cane ethanol, hydrogen, nuclear power, and solar power.

Edwin Black is the author of six books, including "IBM and the Holocaust" and "Banking on Baghdad." He is an investigative journalist and syndicated columnist who has been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize nine times.

Aisha Bain is a program associate at Global Rights: Partners for Justice, where she works on women’s rights in India and environmental rights in Mongolia. Jen Marlowe is a founding member of the "Rachel's Words" initiative (www.rachelswords.org). and is currently facilitating a youth peace-building project in Mostar, Bosnia-Hercegovina. Adam Shapiro most recently served as Country Director in Afghanistan for the international human rights organization Global Rights and is a co-founder of the International Solidarity Movement.

The Circle of Tribal Advisors is a coalition of tribes that views the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial as an opportunity to preserve and celebrate Indian cultures and languages. It highlights ancestors’ legacies and educates people about the history of Native Americans.

Henry Louis Gates also reflects on the influences of W.E.B. Du Bois, Rosa Parks and Wole Soyinka on his life.

Henry Louis Gates is the W.E.B. Du Bois Professor of Humanities and Humanities Chair of the Department of Afro-American Studies at Harvard University. He is the author of "Colored People, " coeditor with Kwame Anthony Appiah of "Encarta Africana," and a frequent contributor to The New Yorker. He has received many honors, including a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship and the National Humanities Medal.

In an event at the New York Public Library in New York City, Carnegie Corporation President Vartan Gregorian interviews David Nasaw, author of a new biography of Andrew Carnegie. Mr. Nasaw's book describes how Carnegie rose from being a poor Scottish immigrant to founding Carnegie Steel and becoming the wealthiest man in the world and a generous philanthropist. According to Mr. Nasaw, Andrew Carnegie's influence extended beyond business to politics; he corresponded with Presidents U.S. Grant, William McKinley, Grover Cleveland, and Theodore Roosevelt, and he was vocal in his opposition to the Spanish American War.

David Nasaw is a history professor at the City University of New York. His work has appeared in the New Yorker, The Nation, Conde Nast Traveler, the London Review of Books and the New York Times. He is the author of "The Chief: The Life of William Randolph Hearst,""Going Out: The Rise and Fall of Public Amusements." and "Children of the City: At Work and at Play."

In marking the fiftieth anniversary of the Hungarian revolution, the Embassy of Hungary hosted a presentation by Professor Charles Gati on his new book. Professor Gati details the 1956 Hungarian revolution and the international political environment at the time. He argues that Hungary's suppression by the U.S.S.R. was a key event in the Cold War and suggests that the revolution could have succeeded if NATO and president Eisenhower had been more decisive. Includes Q&A.

Charles Gati is a political scientist who fled his native Hungary during the 1956 revolt, and is now Senior Adjunct Professor of European Studies at Johns Hopkins University. He has served as the Senior Adviser at the State Department Policy Planning staff in the early 1990's. He is the author of "The Bloc That Failed: Soviet-East Relations in Transition," and "Hungary and the Soviet Bloc."

Former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein was sentenced to death in early November for crimes against humanity. In "Saddam on Trial" co-authors Michael Scharf and Gregory McNeal discuss the trial's legitimacy and describe the roles they played in preparing the Iraqi High Tribunal for the first of several planned court cases. This event was hosted at Joseph-Beth Booksellers in Lyndhurst, Ohio.

Michael Scharf is a law professor and director of the Frederick K. Cox International Law Center at Case Western Reserve University School of Law in Cleveland, Ohio. Mr. Scharf served as a member of the international team of experts that provided training to the judges and prosecutors of the Iraqi High Tribunal. In 2005 he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for his work to help in the prosecution of war criminals. Gregory McNeal is senior fellow in Terrorism and Homeland Security and assistant director of the Institute for Global Security Law and Policy at Case Western Reserve University School of Law. Mr. McNeal has served as executive editor on the Harvard Journal of Law and Public Policy and his editorials have appeared in the Washington Times, National Review Online and the New York Times. During the Saddam Hussein trial, Gregory McNeal served as part of the international academic consortium that provided legal memoranda to the Iraqi High Tribunal.
