The debate is moderated by Cnythia Hessin, executive producer of Rocky Mountain PBS.

David Kopel is Research Director at the Independence Institute in Golden, Colorado. Arnold Grossman co-founded SAFE Colorado, a bipartisan anti-gun violence group, in 2000, following the Columbine school shootings. Mr. Grossman co-authored "1998" with former Colorado governor Richard Lamm.

Econospinning: How to Read Between the Lines When the Media Manipulate the Numbers
Gene Epstein

Journalist Gene Epstein discusses his new book, "Econospinning," at a New York City Barnes & Noble. In his talk, Mr. Epstein makes the point that his fellow journalists frequently misrepresent or misinterpret economic data -- shaping data to fit a preexisting story rather than shaping their story around the data. Mr. Epstein says this behavior is driven by laziness and the desire to tell a compelling story, rather than by ideology. Among the journalists he critcizes are Lou Dobbs, Paul Krugman, and Steven Levitt.

Gene Epstein is the Economics Editor of Barron's and writes the column "Economic Beat." He was previously a senior economist at the New York Stock Exchange and has taught economics at St. John's University and the City University of New York.

From the Association of the United States Army annual meeting in Washington, DC, Daniel Gerstein talks about U.S. national security strategy and how it evolved during the Information Age. He proposes ideas that will advance national security policy into the 21st century.

Col. Daniel Gerstein is a Gulf War veteran and a military fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations. He is the author of "Securing America's Future: National Strategy in the Information Age."

Benedict Arnold's Navy: The Ragtag Fleet that Lost the Battle of Lake Champlain but Won the American Revolution
James Nelson

In "Benedict Arnold's Navy," James Nelson strives to characterize Benedict Arnold as more than a traitor. Mr. Nelson traces Arnold's role in the Army during the American Revolution, including Arnold's role in the battles at Ticonderoga and Valcour Island on Lake Champlain. Nelson chronicles the wit with which Benedict conducted his military endeavors and argues that his entire reputation is marred by Arnold's ultimate abandonment of the American army and alliance with the British.

James Nelson is a former sailor and served as an officer on a number of sailing vessels. His writing covers a wide range of America's maritime heritage, from piracy in Colonial Virginia to the naval action of the Civil War. He has authored "By Force of Arms," "The Maddest Idea,"" The Continental Risque,"" Lords of the Ocean," and "All the Brave Fellows" -- the five books of his Revolution at Sea Saga -- as well as "The Guardship: Book One of the Brethren of the Coast."

48. There is something very strange about this author.
I want to slander him by saying I don't believe he did what he says he did - although he's very attractive and there's no rational reason to do that. Great presentation. But that whole Shelby Foote story sort of rang alarms. We'll be hearing more from this one.

Unsafe at Any Altitude: Failed Terrorism Investigations, Scapegoating 9/11, and the Shocking Truth about Aviation Security Today
Susan Trento & Joseph Trento

Susan Trento and Joseph Trento look at the U.S. government's investigations into the quality of airport security following 9/11 and assess the state of airport security today. They argue that the private airport security workers that received a large amount of blame following the 9/11 attacks did their jobs properly and that the takeover of airport security by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has not helped to improve security. They also discuss the U.S. government's no-fly list and its effectiveness.

Susan Trento, former vice president of operations for John McLaughlin's Oliver Productions, is the author of "Prescription for Disaster" and "The Power House." Investigative reporter Joseph Trento is the president of the Public Education Center, a nonprofit investigative foundation (www.storiesthatmatter.org). Internal Combustion: How Corporations and Governments Addicted the World to Oil and Derailed the Alternatives
Edwin Black

At a recent meeting of the American Jewish Committee's Institute for Analysis of Global Security in Washington, DC, Edwin Black describes how the automotive and petroleum industries have encouraged oil dependence. Mr. Black begins by telling his audience that people have been trying to monopolize resources -- wood, water, electricity, etc. -- since the beginning of human history. He then explains that the first battery-powered car was developed in the 1890s, but its production was undermined by advocates of the internal combustion engine. Edwin Black concludes his talk by weighing in on the feasability of alternative energy sources such as corn & sugar cane ethanol, hydrogen, nuclear power, and solar power.

Edwin Black is the author of six books, including "IBM and the Holocaust" and "Banking on Baghdad." He is an investigative journalist and syndicated columnist who has been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize nine times.

Lewis and Clark Through Indian Eyes
Alvin Josephy, Jr., ed.

"Lewis and Clark Through Indian Eyes" is a collection of nine essays and family stories about the Lewis and Clark expedition and the expedition's effect on the Native American people it encountered. During a Lewis and Clark symposium in St. Louis, Native American contributors to the book discuss their points of view about Lewis and Clark and the 200-year aftermath of the explorers’ travels. The panelists are Roberta Conner, Gerard Baker, Craig Howe, Debra Magpie Earling, Allen Pinkham, and William Yellowtail, The panel is moderated by N. Scott Momaday.

The Circle of Tribal Advisors is a coalition of tribes that views the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial as an opportunity to preserve and celebrate Indian cultures and languages. It highlights ancestors’ legacies and educates people about the history of Native Americans.

19. The Starfish and the Spider: The Unstoppable Power of Leaderless Organizations
On Sunday December 17 at 7:05 am

The Starfish and the Spider: The Unstoppable Power of Leaderless Organizations
Ori Brafman & Rod Beckstrom,

Understanding the amazing force that links some of today’s most successful companies

If you cut off a spider’s leg, it’s crippled; if you cut off its head, it dies. But if you cut off a starfish’s leg it grows a new one, and the old leg can grow into an entirely new starfish.
What’s the hidden power behind the success of Wikipedia, craigslist, and Skype? What do eBay and General Electric have in common with the abolitionist and women’s rights movements? What fundamental choice put General Motors and Toyota on vastly different paths? How could winning a Supreme Court case be the biggest mistake MGM could have made?

After five years of ground-breaking research, Ori Brafman and Rod Beckstrom share some unexpected answers, gripping stories, and a tapestry of unlikely connections. The Starfish and the Spider argues that organizations fall into two categories: traditional “spiders,” which have a rigid hierarchy and top-down leadership, and revolutionary “starfish,” which rely on the power of peer relationships.

The Starfish and the Spider explores what happens when starfish take on spiders (such as the music industry vs. Napster, Kazaa, and the P2P services that followed). It reveals how established companies and institutions, from IBM to Intuit to the US government, are also learning how to incorporate starfish principles to achieve success. The book explores:
* How the Apaches fended off the powerful Spanish army for 200 years
* The power of a simple circle
* The importance of catalysts who have an uncanny ability to bring people together
* How the Internet has become a breeding ground for leaderless organizations
* How Alcoholics Anonymous has reached untold millions with only a shared ideology and without a leader
