26. To Clarify, I think I hit the button unintentionally.
A day or 2 later when I saw I had somebody on ignore, I immediately removed him.

I couldn't remember any reason WHY I would have ignored him.

In 4 years as a member here, I've been in only 1 actual flame war. I can't say that that individual is my favorite person here, but I didn't ignore.

3. They bully without any merit. They're not clever and they're
Edited on Sat Dec-16-06 01:10 AM by valerief
not constructively critical and they're not silly and they're not helpful. They're just bullies looking for a fight. So who needs that crap? I got ganged up on once because I expressed sympathy for a Katrina victim who was being booted out of a house given to her by a group that wanted it back. It didn't register to me that the group was a church, but I sure got a good going-over by the faithful of that church or megachurch. And all I did was say I felt bad for the woman, who had a toddler and a newborn when Katrina hit.

Hmm, I'm whining now myself. But I'm not bullying!

8. Yep. Some just spoiling for a fight and not thinking clearly.
Done with dealing with THAT shit with a divorce many years ago.

Trying to reason with someone who just wants to fight and blow some passive/aggressive frustration at a handy target is like trying to reason with a drunk. No point, it just won't be constructive.

96. If someone wants a fight...
I say give it to them. If a poster is pushy and obnoxious in the course of political discussion, it's better to point the fact out and deflate them than let them continue and annoy other people. I've never ignored anyone here, the only time I did anything of the sort was when I killfiled a truly asinine individual on USENET. He wasn't really a bully, or much of a malicious individual at all, but he posted reams of punishingly stupid material over and over and paid no heed to anyone who refuted him. Fortunately, I've never encountered such a situation since.

77. I've Never Heard Of That Before. They Actually Do That?
Wow. I didn't know they have forced ignore on some.

Probably a good idea though. If two posters are otherwise of value to the board, but when confronted with each other cause disruption, yet didn't make the choice on their own to ignore each other but have enough value outside of their inter-conversations, then I could see why that would be a welcome practice from the admins to nip the situation in the bud for them.

He's the only one I've heard of that I've seen people here say used to be someone else. (If you don't know who I'm talking about, then you were talking about someone else)

On edit: Actually maybe that's not who you're talking about, since I believe that poster's old name wasn't tombstoned. If the person you're talking about was tombstoned though, how come they were able to come back with a new name? That's kinda odd.

12. Never, ever, and here's why
No matter how much of a fool someone may seem to be on first glance, every opinion, no matter how motivated, is worthy of evaluation.

If you cannot defend yourself against an unworthy attack, then how can you ever defend yourself against one that has merit?

IMO, you should use farcical and ridiculous opinions for practice in your quest for logical conclusions.

27. But some opinions,
having been evaluated and found lacking are worth ignoring if the person holding them insists on repeating them over and over again.

I have four people on ignore- 3 for being boring and repetitious and 1 for being nasty while simultaneously adding nothing to the discussions.

We had a troll a few month back who kept posting "Kill all the Jews"- about six threads in GD before he was tombstoned. Do you seriously think we should sit down and evaluate this opinion objectively looking at all the advantages and disadvantages of killing all the Jews? Or should some people just be escorted from the building by the elbow?

but I'm having a slow day...

To answer the original post - I do sometimes - about 2 or three times since I joined up in 2001 - but then I undo it because I'm too damned curious with what they have to say.

And I find that everyone has something valid to say - even if it is less than I'd prefer!

Imagine - not everyone agrees with me! (hard to fathom, I know)...

All but a couple of those I did temp place on ignore were eventually tombstoned.

There are people who raise the volume of their voices when they feel they're losing an argument. As far as I'm concerned that's an admission they HAVE lost the argument.

It comes through in writing too. It's uncivil and it's stupid.

I've been guilty of it, but I'm trying get better.

Some people seem addicted to the behavior. Ten deep breaths before you respond seems very helpful for me.

44. Yes, for two reasons.
1) Those who somehow skirt DUs flame rules time and time again and keep doing it no matter how many times they get alerted. It's not constructive and serves to close the debate, so fuck them. I'm not wasting my time.

2) Those who support middle class job offshoring and call you "xenophobic", "nativist" and an "angry white-man Buchananite" (right, because the American middle class is ONLY comprised of white males. Good luck with that. :eyes: ). There's a few in the Red X toilet for such bullshittery. Sorry, I've experienced and personally talked to too many people who got the shit-end of the stick and subsequently had their lives and careers ruined thanks to this practice to see "the great things globalization brings to this country" side of things. Destroying one middle class to the point of no return to lift another is wrong, wrong, WRONG on so many levels.

but if a poster is consistently offensive, is a bully or overly repetitive, that poster makes my ignore list. There are thousands of us out there posting all the time and there are only so many posts I can cut through in an evening, so it helps to streamline things for me. Occasionally, I'll revisit my ignore list and take someone off ignore, too.

and it was shortly after the elections last month. This person has over 1000 posts, and for some reason blasted me multiple times for having 20something posts at the time. I joined DU in January/February of 2001, and forgot my username and password. After several attempts of contacting Admin to get this taken care of without any response, I created a new userid.

what is there to fear from another person, besides flawed logic and bad decisions,
and what damage can they do in a discussion except as a coathook for your best post yet.

'ignore' is a way to reinforce groupthink, to filter out some of the most
brilliant and enlightened persons of DU. To remove any of them, is an insult to the
community as a whole.

56. Nope.
There really is no point, IMO, in using that function. I have placed people on "soft ignore," meaning I won't respond to their posts, but I can still read what they wrote. However, 'soft ignore' can be a problem because I may respond out of anger, but most of the time, I try to ignore them or just alert on their post.

71. "soft ignore", I like that term, what I use
Have had words with many on DU at times, some of us (including me) can answer too fast or furiously, then later have a good discussion with the same person was just flaming with. I try to soft ignore also, can you read this?

that it seems they never have anything worth listening to, and they would just push up my blood pressure. I have one person on ignore; from comments I've seen on another site, it seems to continue to be a good decision.

62. Almost exactly my reasons...
...for having 3 people on my IL: One for long, rambling, self-indulgent posts (and far too many of them), and two more for posting the same bloody OP every single day, with no information within. I just got tired of seeing the same stupid threads show up in the forum listings day after day after day, and ignoring the posters altogether was much more efficient than hiding the same threads over and over.

I used to hate the idea of ignoring anyone, because an "Ignored" post disrupts the flow of a thread I do want to read -- but the funny thing is, none of those three people ever show up in the threads that interest me! LOL

Many. I put on ignore for a variety of reasons, main ones are those who have a pet subject that they constantly post about over and over every day which doesn't interest me, those who are just plain jerks, those who I think are freepers but somehow never get banned, for example there was a guy who would post threads that were constant attacks on the Democratic party, not sure if he is still here (I put him on ignore years ago) but he managed to rack up thousands of posts here. Another one is people who post "vanity" threads but try to put a political spin on it to make it appear ok for General discussion and not moved to the lounge, I'm not saying once but those who do this consistently.

Generally, I won't hesitate to ignore for a variety of reasons, I like how it filters out threads that I wouldn't be interested in anyway. Occasionally, I will investigate the ignored replies and if the poster's reply seems reasonable and it seems I can't remember why I placed them on ignore, I will take them off the list.

I can only think of one person that I've ever put on ignore - it was the thread about the woman that put her baby in the microwave, and after going round-and-round with the poster doing little but making personal attacks, I finally gave up and put him on ignore.

It didn't last too long, because he was tombstoned soon after.

73. I dont because I think it would be letting
someone who is annoying get the upper hand. I am assuming that anyone I would be tempted to put on ignore would be obnoxious. I wouldn't want to give someone who is being obnoxious the satisfaction. If someone is being obnoxious I would either respond in kind, diplomatically, or if they are making themselves look bad - just let them have the last word.

Admittedly I am a somewhat casual poster/reader so if I was more involved maybe things would be different.

74. No. I Know It Would Be Useless For Me. I'm Too Impulsive. If I Saw A Reply That Said 'Ignored' Or
whatever, I know I probably wouldn't be able to resist 'unignoring' so I could see who wrote it or what it said. So the purpose would be entirely defeated, ya know? LOL

One of these days I should give it a try anyway though, since there are a few posters that have nothing more than ignorant repetitive animosity to spew that I'd be better off having not paid attention to, to begin with.

I don't imagine that I ever will, either, because I don't really see myself getting sufficiently worked up about what anonymous people post on the internet to lead to putting them on ignore. I do ignore some posters' posts as in I skip over them and don't read them, but I haven't yet felt the need to put them on official "ignore" status.
