Cancer drop suggests link to menopause hormones

SAN ANTONIO -- U.S. breast cancer rates plunged an unprecedented seven per cent in 2003, the year after millions of women stopped taking menopause hormones when a study showed the pills raise the risk of tumours.

The startling new analysis, reported Thursday at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium, does not prove a link between hormone therapy and breast cancer, but strongly suggests it, many experts said.

Cancers take years to form, so going off hormones would not instantly prevent new tumours. But tumours that had been developing might stop growing, shrink or disappear so they were no longer detected by mammograms, doctors theorized.

The drop was seen in every single cancer registry that reports information to the federal government, and no big change occurred with any other major type of cancer. These are strong signs that the breast cancer decline is no statistical fluke or error.

2. Personally, I wonder if lack of regular medical care due to $$ has something to do with it

Sorta like the unemployment numbers just showing the people who are actually receiving unemployment compensation. The cancer numbers only count people who are actually getting examinations.

My guess is a whole lotta women will be having shorter life spans in coming years. There are too many NOT getting any sort of regular exams and tests.

Gonna see a lot of very sick people with TB too.

4. I agree with you

I am menopausal and know lots of women my age who are as well. None of us have been on hormone therapy. Either they didn't have health insurance or didn't believe/trust in the therapy anyway.

Those are the ones I was really referring to.

Not just lack of opportunity to get HRT, but no visits to ANY doctor unless they are whisked to one following a car wreck. No mammograms. No pap smears. No body to help with overwhelming fears when they find, and have to ignore, a lump that shouldn't be there.

The cancer rates are dropping? Or fewer and fewer people have ANY sort of dealing with medical care?

The latter is more than most people realize.

6. There are MORE than TWO hormones

When they talk about HRT, they refer to estrogen and progesterone. Estrogen causes cell proliferation, which is what they are talking about.

There are many other hormones==the primary other sex hormone is testosterone which women need in small quantities and which the FDA won't approve.
