On CNN.com - Edwards to enter 2008 race..
http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/12/16/edwards.forpresident.ap/index.html

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Former Democratic vice presidential nominee John Edwards intends to seek his party's nomination for the 2008 presidential race, two Democratic officials said Saturday.

Edwards, who represented North Carolina in the U.S. Senate for six years, plans to make the campaign announcement late this month from the New Orleans neighborhood hit hardest by last year's Hurricane Katrina.

snip

As Edwards enters the crowded field, the Lower Ninth Ward neighborhood in New Orleans provides a stark backdrop to highlight his signature issue -- economic inequality.

Nice touch announcing from the Ninth Ward. Maybe this will stop (or at least slow) the constant Hillary/Obama talk in the MSM.

1. Woohoo (thinking like a corporate lackey)
we have a race!

By the way, are the idiots at CNN speaking of Vislak or Kucinich, or is this obama\hillary all the time, never mind they have not announced squat yet?

is what bothers me. Not that I don't think he'd make a good president but it will hamper him if he does run.

35. Well there's the 5 more years in the Senate
but you do have a point. Obama was in the state legislature in Illinois 2 years before Edwards ran for Senate. Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

It just seems to me that John Edwards has more experience in national politics whereas Obama is just now emerging on the national scene.

32. Agreed... However an Edwards/Obama ticket
might not be bad. I for one am hoping that we end up with someone not even being mentioned at this point. It just seems to me that the Republicans and the media are trying to choose our candidate for us. Nice to see ya Bro.

Much more information. I didn't know that he had several hundred thousand dollars in campaign debt. He better get to fund raising pretty quickly.

6. It is a shame they have to announce about
two years in advance. But these days politics seem to require it. Or rather, the media. I am glad John Edwards is running however. He seems to have a knack for interacting with the public. Now if the media will let him be and let him get on with his run for president he will do just fine. I think an Edwards/Clark pairing is just what we need. Of all the candidates they seem to empathize more with me and others. Hillary would make a good president but the media will never leave her alone. And they will ride Obama like a thoroughbread until we are sick of hearing it. All good candidates but they will be swift-boated by the media. Just my two cents.

9. Clark wouldn't run with Edwards - Edwards' association with
Gen. Shelton, who made unfounded attacks on Clark, pretty much ruined any chance of that pairing. Clark's son has had some choice words to say about that, as well.

And, besides, Clark has said he wouldn't run as anyone's Dick Cheney (meaning, he wouldn't run with someone who had no foreign policy experience like the Bush/Cheney pairing).

7. I agree, it will be a nice touch announcing from the Ninth Ward.

It is evident that he understands the marketing of himself to the American people. I do think he cares about what happens to the poor and middle class in this country, so it's not an empty gesture (like so many, well ALL, of George Bush's photo ops are).

8. The Dems need to spotlight NOLA
Especially Edwards with his anti-poverty and economic equality message. Dems need to pound the utter failure of the Bush administration in NOLA at every opportunity. The fact that they're still finding bodies there is disgusting.

11. This is good news.
I like Edwards - he talks about issues that Democrats haven't talked about in decades.

I saw a documentary not long ago that had Humphrey's nominating speech in 1968, and it shocked me how far from traditional Democratic themes we've gotten since 1992.

I posted it on another thread. He's a great speaker and I also think that his message will resonate with the shrinking middle class.

46. A question for the peanut gallery...
Edited on Sun Dec-17-06 03:05 PM by me b zola
First, look downthread @ my second response (post # 18) to this thread and notice the timestamp. When I posted this I had just heard from CNN that 2/3 of all Americans are working paycheck to paycheck.

From your posts in this thread I gather that you also like Edwards. Although my post was a bit of an exageration, I believe that Edwards could garner a corner of the republican vote. With Lou Dobbs leading more conservative voters to the examine issues of the shrinking middle class/working class I believe that less republican voters will be inclined to vote against their interest this time around. Edwards' platform is rich with addressing these issues. Meanwhile, Guiliani brings what to the table? He pisses of many of the republicans and stands for nothing other than to remind people that the was mayor of NYC at the time of 911.

So my question to you is this. Why is a possitive and hopeful post about Edwards such nonsense that you felt the need to join in someones else's hateful attack against me?

19. Edwards Leads McCain In National Trial Heat (Chris Bowers)
-snip-
More good news for Edwards:

The poll — which was taken of 1,006 adults from Dec. 8-11, and which has a margin of error of 3.1 percentage points — comes a month after Democrats won control of Congress in the midterms, due in part to the public's dissatisfaction with the Iraq war.(...)

In some head-to-head match ups, McCain leads Clinton by four points (47 to 43 percent) and Obama by five points (43 percent to 38 percent). But — in an interesting twist — the Arizona senator trails Edwards by two points (43 percent to 41 percent).

29. Howard Dean as president.. I'd still love to see that...
but he's now got more baggage than Hillary!

As for Edwards he caught my eye as the VP candidate but what he's done with his poverty/economic equality really impressed me. He's a true Progressive and he has the charisma to appeal to the common person IMHO.

34. Depends..That message might resonate with more and more people...
who are seeing their buying power going down, their houses worth less, their retirements in doubt, etc while Exxon/Mobile is experiencing record profits and Goldman Sachs is giving out $40M bonuses.

You know me. I've been looking for a populist progressive and Edwards is the best I've seen. You are right, he'll have to battle the "socialist" image. We'll see how he pulls it off.

45. At least there's a lot of discussion about him...
Some of it a little disconcerting. I still like the guy but he's got a history of being a little too cozy with the banking industry and there is his voting for the Iraq War.

Discussion is good and we're a long way from the election.
