Citizen Dreyfuss - by Katrina vanden Heuvel
'Richard Dreyfuss stood before a packed community meeting in Martha's Vineyard last week and asked, "Where do we offer young people the chance to fall in love with America?" He insisted that he was "not speaking for Democrats, Republicans or anything else. as an American who wants to hand to his kids the country he learned about." He then led a discussion on the importance of reviving civics education in our nation's public schools.

The man who once obsessively built clay models of a form that couldn't escape his mind, who warned locals on this same island of a killer shark roaming the waters offshore, who devoted himself to teaching music at the expense of his relationship with his hearing-impaired son... Those fictitious events were part of Dreyfuss's other life as an actor. But it is Citizen Dreyfuss who spoke at the community meeting--living what he calls "the second half of my life."

From the age of 12, Dreyfuss has wanted to do three things: be an actor, be a movie star, and be in politics. He says that four years ago, after he was fired from the London production of The Producers, he decided it was time to retire and do the third thing.'

3.  "You were born with two eyes, two ears, one nose, and one mouth. Use them in those proportions."
I love that quote! Look, listen, learn, and keep your mouth shut until you have something important to say. Sounds good to me!
Thanks for the article; I like Katrina and Dreyfuss.

4. One nose. Must mean people shouldn't wear so much stinky
cologne.

But on the subject of this thread, I like Dreyfuss, too.

5. It's a shame he retired from film making, but he is putting his time to great use.
We could use a few million more like him.

7. He was probably the guest on Bill Maher who impressed me the
most in the 20 or so shows that I've seen. If you ever get the chance to watch him - you will realize that he is no slouch about politics and about forming substantive sentences related to politics. I hope he goes far and people use the two ears when he speaks. He's a hero of mine now.

I also think being an American is taking on a new emphasis for me. The Dems are so darn disappointing - if Republicans are worker bees for the Baron Party, too many Dems are in on the deal. I would like an American Party. Those who hold close what we're supposed to be about and what we were working on with the help of good people with clear heads (which for me, excludes too many Dem leaders.)

10. i seen that segment and was sensing from him a passing wish that...
Maher would bring it all round to something that wasn't merely a joke to him...sometimes i do agree, while funny & humor helps us cope; this is a serious world

out and didn't want to get side tracked. Sometimes the stuff is just silly. Yes, this is a serious world.

Especially right now - on the way home I was wondering if I'm going to want to hear tomorrow mornings' news. Things are so tense right now and we're the mushrooms in the cave with a little light coming from DU and the links. If it's up to the U.S. to cause an eruption, we're probably safe until after Christmas and Hanakkuh.
Yet, we've had a couple of years of not waiting for Ramadan to end. Maybe there will be a prince of peace on Christmas Eve.
