In a bookstore, there was a poster of a children's DVD named "Noah's Ark." Nothing to be upset about, until I read the tagline:
"A beautiful DVD with a wonderful message: obeying is the best thing."
Am I a deviant for feeling disgust at that?

5. I Really Can't Understand Why This Would Be Bothersome. |
|
Is respect for parent's wishes or a well behaved child that listens to the parent's requests something I'm supposed to find appalling now?
There are tons of products out there for children that illustrate and magnify the message of respecting/obeying parents. It is of course a good message and I'm perplexed as to what you find disgusting about it (unless you think it appropriate for children not to listen to their parents, and run around like little maniacs and brats).

.. fully intelligent and wonderful human beings who deserve respect and the freedom to be kids?
Are parents not able to model what it means to be obedient based on their own good thinking, and disobedient when authorities run fowl of what's good for human beings?

|
That's why, when I first stumbled upon it, the first thing that popped into my mind was this movie.

9. obedience as the primary directive |
|
sounds punitive and mind-numbing. Sets kids up to be good little soldiers.
Respect kids and make sure they learn to respect you. I think that works better in the long run than blind obedience.

10. Children learn from their parents. |
|
Just make sure that you show a really true example of how to behave every hour of the day. They absorb this. All the talking in the world is not going to sway them if your saying one thing and doing another. Always be true to the truth. They will follow.

I want her to think for herself, even if she disagrees with me.
Not obeying and "running around like little maniacs and brats" are not synonymous. It is definitely possible to respectfully disagree and come to an agreement with each other.

31. Not every parent is a saint |
|
But that is not referring to children and parents, I guess it is referring to God, that's fine, but then, how does one know what God wants? Unless one is Dubya, God's commands are usually actually up to the individual to figure out.
I think the OP was referring to the obvious; teaching people to obey authority, which would be the message right wing fundies have propagated before.
Not in this country (which I say as a proud and patriotic American)

Children should obey their parents, sure. But it didn't specify parents. Or teachers. Or even "God". The disturbing part is the generic obeying part.
No, I don't think you're a deviant for feeling icky at that. It makes me want to do something rebellious, LOL.

is not a bad virtue for children to have. In raising 2 boys it is a necessity. The problem is that obedience alone is not enough. You creat robots that way. It needs to be tempered with creativity, wonder, love, empathy, understanding, etc.
It is also something that changes drastically when they are pre-teens. Rebellion, along with obedience, should both be encouraged and practiced daily.
I know the rebels in here will challenge me on the obedience thing, but if we want to make our way in this world, following directions and learning how to be obedient to our own awareness is a good thing.

27. Not a deviant at all. It's HARMFUL to be raised with that notion, & |
|
here's an example.
For some stupid reason I sat through one of those taped cable news shows about a young woman, a teenager, who had been sexually assaulted for an hour or more on a prank call to the fast food restaurant where she worked. She fell for it because she was raised "to do what people in authority tell me to do."
The scam: the perp called the store, identified himself as a police officer (he wasnt), said a woman's purse had been stolen at the restaurant and the young woman was apparenty identified by her store manager as possibly responsible (she wasn't). Little by little, the perp had the woman completely naked, doing jumping jacks at one point, and others in the store doing -- well, I won't go into it. This is a scam that's gone on around the country, btw.
TEACH YOUR CHILDREN TO QUESTION AUTHORITY!!!! Not just question but CHALLENGE them, if necessary.

32. No. Children need to follow adult direction. |
|
It keeps them safe. It's not a clear-cut, black/white issue. While some sense of obedience is necessary, it's also necessary to healthy development, in my opinion, to question those directions. To question why things are the way they are, to look for cause and effect relationships, to make connections, to reflect before making choices, rather than blind obedience or automatic defiance. We teach kids to do these things. While they are learning, we enforce obedience. "Don't run out into the street," "Wash your hands after you use the restroom and before you eat," etc.; we teach them habits of safety, health, and courtesy. They don't start with understanding; they start with obedience and gain an understanding as they grow.
"obeying is the best thing" might better be "obedience is smart while you discover the reasons behind the directive so that you can make an informed choice."
