IS our future looking grim, or am I imagining things? |
|
I have this really bad feeling in my gut. The one that says something terrible is looming around the corner. I don't know what it is. I don't know if it's economic disaster, or an explosion in Iraq that spreads to the rest of the Middle East, or a terror attack, or some unknown terrible thing. But I know I wake up at night sometimes and worry.
It's nothing I can put my finger on. It's just a very strong feeling that something is not quite right, if you know what I mean.
Am I imagining things, or is there really something looming out there? Why do I feel such a high level of anxiety about our future?

1. History is indeed little more than the register of the crimes, follies, and misfortunes of mankind |

Edward Gibbon
Historically speaking, there is ALWAYS a bad thing that is going to happen, eventually ...
There are also good things about to happen ...
Sometimes those things are REALLY bad or REALLY good .... you cannot know for sure either way ....
Something you can look for are trends : The trend in the ME is very pessimistic, very negative .... and so that feeling you have is well founded in that regard ... The economic numbers have been jimmied by this maladministration, and so the financial reports reflect how GREAT things are for those at the very top, but ignore the pain at the middle and lower classes ....
Yeah .. things will probably get worse before they get better, but there is no absolute gauge for these ideas ...

there's a school of thought that says if Yellowstone goes it will pretty much be the end of life on this continent anyway.

We are borrowing money so fast I worry too. Bush makes me worry all the time. I felt better right after the elections but doubt is creeping back into my life as well. Bush hasn't completely bankrupted America but we are going in that direction fast. 50 years worth of damage has been done to this country in the six years under Bush.

Sales are down in my little town, and it's a week before Christmas! No one is out buying things, even at Wal-Mart, believe it or not. Business is slow no matter what you do, be it run a booth in a flea market, have an online business, are a doctor, or a pest control operator (May seem to be an odd list, but these are the occupations of folks I know, including myself).
On the way home from Universal Worship today, I looked at the bare trees and had the odd thought - what if they never leaf out again? It was there just for a moment, but it was a moment of incredible sadness. I feel like I am at the end of something rather than a part of a cycle that will continue on as it always has.

I think those who are still doing well may just be out of the collective conscience or the flow of energy .
But as far as I am feeling right now there is a sort of strange stillness . It is like the calm before the storm sort of feeling .
I know there are millions in this country who are not doing well at all , starving and homeless more now than ever before .
So yes , I to have a bad feeling that I can't quite put my finger on and it is with me most days and nights .

The results of this last election was a positive step in the right direction, but we're not out of the woods yet...the neo-cons will be doing a lot of damage to our country in the next two years, which will have serious consequences for us beyond those two years. IMO, the Dems taking power now will blow their chances of changing the direction of things, and this country will see hard economic times, as there are too many Dems working for the same people Bush is working for. The only positive thing I see for the immediate future is that the Republican Party will be destroyed. Sorry for the bleak forecast, but we wil prevail eventually and get back to our roots (i.e. Freedom as a philosophy). History is repeating itself.

There are always things that can go wrong, but when you consider the fact that after only 3,000 deaths in Iraq (compared with 60,000 in Vietnam), the American people are already decrying the war, that's a great sign of national progress. Also, consider that not only did the Democrats win here, but the reformers won local elections in Iran. That's a sign that the right wing is losing power. The right wing tried it's way -- and whether its Bush, bin Laden, Ahmadinejad, or Kim Jong -- they all failed miserably and are losing credibility with their own people. It's more likely that another age of progress is just around the corner. The right wing rage will soon become a whimper.
