Olive oil may be effective against cancer
NEW YORK, Dec. 13 (UPI) -- European scientists say anti-cancer effects of olive oil may account for the difference in cancer rates among Northern and Southern Europeans.

The authors based their conclusion on the outcomes of volunteers from Denmark, Finland, Germany, Italy and Spain who consumed 25 milliliters, or a bit less than a quarter cup, of olive oil every day for three weeks.

During this time the researchers examined urine samples of the subjects for specific compounds known to be waste byproducts of oxidative damage to cells, a precursor to cancer. At the beginning of the trial the presence of these waste by-products was much higher in Northern European subjects than their Southern European counterparts.

However, at the end of three weeks the presence of this compound in Northern European subjects was substantially reduced, according to the study published in the January issue of The Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology Journal.

1. well, that's good for your gall bladder too
if you're on an otherwise low fat diet.

I use olive oil in everything, even brownies - and I haven't aged a day since yesterday. It's a miracle.

:P

2. Isn't 25 ml a little less than an ounce?
29.something ml/ounce? 1/4 cup is 2 oz.

10. coupla tablespoons a day

have a salad and cook one item substituting olive oil for butter every day. Use "butter" made from olive oil (the Healthy Choice / Smart Choice and some other heart healthy butter subsitutes are partially made from olive oil).

It's actually pretty easy to get a couple of tablespoons of real olive oil a day. Use bread to sop up some olive oil with black, crushed pepper and any green spice you want cracked into it. Eat a hand full of olives every day. Eat lots of green stuff, and eat grape leaves, raisins, spinach, greens, black olives, and cooked tomatoes. Greek and mediterranean cuisine is very healthy and good for you from end to end.

11. Sure. I just thought a couple oz might be a little excessive--
about 450 calories just in the oil.

5. I know what you mean, but I've heard olive oil is good for you the last
20+ years. If anything I see this as 'more of the same' than something new.

9. Not hard here. Olive oil has been known to be very healthy
for a LONG time.

This just shows one MORE reason it's the best choice.
