I just joined the ACLU
A friend has been urging me to do so forever, but today, the the wake of free speech zones, Cindy Sheehan's arrest and the appointment of Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court, it seems more important that ever.

I'm still in the "I've got to do something" mind set, so that's what I did. Might be a good idea if lots of others did so, too.

12. They called me the other week
and I happened to be upset about something "fascist" when I picked up the phone. I said they could take money out of my account each month and maybe he knew why I could barely talk from the emotion that had bubbled over inside.

14. I just gave them money...
and I signed up for the newsletter. I hope I'll get a card - I'd love to whip it out when talking to repubs and say, "Watch yourself, I'm a card-carrying member of the ACLU."

Yeah, I'm in a bad mood. I'm tired of the media (and I AM media), my senators and the Bush idiots screwing around with my country.

19. You can give a one-time contribution for your annual membership.
You get a card (yes, you'll be a "card-carrying member") and regular mailings from your local chapter, plus occasional mailings from the national organization.

16. Welcome to the ACLU.
Edited on Wed Feb-01-06 11:47 AM by mcscajun
I joined in October 2001, when the Bush threats became all too clear. Now, as they come to fruition and the fight gets harder and more critical, greater financial resources are needed.

It's great to see more DUers giving to the ACLU; we need them now more than ever before.

To all those reading this thread who haven't yet joined, please think about it; to those who already have, think about becoming one of the ACLU's "Guardians of Liberty". Guardians commit to a monthly contribution, however small (*mine's $5.00, wish it could be more*) over and above their annual membership contribution, to assist in the ongoing fight.

ACLU Calls For Special Counsel: Add Your Voice

When President Bush secretly authorized the National Security Agency to spy on Americans, he violated the law, the Constitution and his oath of office.

No American is beneath the law's protection. And no one -- not even a U.S. president -- is above the law's limits.

Our system of checks and balances must be maintained if American democracy is to be preserved. Take action below, or read more.

THANK YOU ACLU!!!

21. I joined last Saturday.
When Congressman John Conyers had his forum to discuss what is happening, one of the other speakers was a lady from the ACLU. After her talk she asked everyone to join the ACLU. I've been meaning to do so for years but never got around to it until I was handed an application.
That just goes to show, if you want something, ask for it.

23. I've been a member for awhile now and
I've let my membership lapse now and again, too. But the last few years I not only ante up the dues on time, but I send more when I can. The other day I got a call from them asking for a contribution. It was a recently returned soldier from Iraq! We had a great conversation. He said he knew he had to join when he got back. We both felt the way you do, that we need them now more than ever.

When I heard that the capital police had arrested Cindy for wearing a polically offensive T-shirt, I thought that the ACLU had bribed them-but then again who says that Karl Rove is so smart?-SEJANUS

26. I haver been a Card Carrying Member of the ACLU for just over 15
years.

I can't say I agree w/everything that falls into the ACLU's fold, but I can assure you that the vast majority of cases never get heard about, and conservatives use them when it benefits them as well. The ACLU got involved with keeping Limbaugh's medical records secure, but Limbaugh seems to think that was his little pet to take home...he complains when others think that theri medical/phone or other records are private. Nothing like a little hypocrisy to season the day...:(
