Objections to Bush library mount at Texas university

RAW STORY
Published: Monday December 18, 2006

As planners moved closer on deciding where in Texas to site President George W. Bush's library, members of the community at one candidate university expressed objections about the establishment of the facility at their school.

Southern Methodist University is one of the three schools that may play host to the presidential library of George W. Bush, along with the University of Dallas and Baylor University.

The blog of Paul Burka, the senior executive editor of the magazine Texas Monthly, includes excerpts of a letter written to SMU's president by faculty, administrators, and staff of the university's Perkins School of Theology, worrying about siting the library at the university. In it, they say they would:

...regret to see SMU enshrine attitudes and actions widely deemed as ethically egregious: degradation of habeas corpus, outright denial of global warming, flagrant disregard for international treaties, alienation of long-term U.S. allies, environmental predation, shameful disrespect for gay persons and their rights, a pre-emptive war based on false and misleading premises, and a host of other erosions of respect for the global human community and for this good Earth on which our flourishing depends.
An article following up on the story, written by Scott Jaschik and published in the journal Inside Higher Education, notes that SMU is considered the frontrunner among the three schools hoping to host the library. It also reports that the organizers of the letter and the critics of the library have been trying to make the debate on the library focus on academic standards instead of Bush bashing.

2. He'll probably end up building it in Kennebunkport
on private land next to the Bush compound.

I'm guessing they'll phase out the pig farm soon after he's gone. It was only meant to be the "look, I live in Texas" house anyway. It would be very fitting if they can't get it built anywhere because the people don't want it. It would drive the Freepers crazy(er). :)

11. Well, Baylor definitely wants it. Their students are not allowed
to protest - not that they want to. Our local non-student "Friends of Peace" group protests the library every month or so. "NO WAR CRIMES MUSEUMS IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD."

18. I'm proud of them and all the others that have taken the time to protest this
I need to clarify that I wasn't bashing Baylor. I just happen to know a retired professor from there who keeps me informed on this bit of gossip. All I was aware of was the university's desire, I had no knowledge of how the students or people of Waco felt about it.

Keep up the protesting!

30. that's interesting. I sat next to an ex=professor from Baylor not
too long ago on a flight. He was very cool. Very liberal. In fact,
he told me that most all the professors were liberal. It was the
students who were conservative - or rather their parents. He said
that the students would never in a million years even think about
protesting - because it could embarrass their parents. Besides,
he said most were not politically aware enough to care enough to
protest.

16. Ha. Even if he's not in prison - for the life of me I can not imagine
what the hell they would put in a library. Sure, they all probably have bad things that a president had to deal with - but they all probably have a lot of good things the president tried to do - like Carter and mideast peace talks. Bush has absolutely no good things - seriously - can you even think of one?

17. The only good thing that I have seen Bush do is to
set aside portions of Hawaii including surrounding ocean as a wild life preserve and I believe a National Park (I would have to check this.) However, wanting to drill for oil in the ANWAR wild life preserve in Alaska sort of cancels that out.

Not that I want his stupid library anywhere near me, of course.

-to put in position for operation
-assign a location to

I hope the liebrrey is placed utterly out of site, but the word was used correctly.

So far his library would only contain a copy of "My Pet Goat" and "Bin Laden Determined to Attack America".

32. How could anyone want it?
I mean, between the locked rooms of "withheld" documents and the redacted pages that they would make available, what the hell would be the point? A framed cod piece and a picture of Barney and Mrs. Beasley are hardly reason enough to build a whole new building. A refrigerator box should do for that, shouldn't it?

34. The tragedy is what he's done to the office
Can anyone remember a time in which people were clamoring to NOT be chosen as the site of a presidential library? Having a presidential library on your campus should be an honor.

That's a good barometer of how bad it's gotten.
