2 Episcopal parishes split from church - See acceptance of gays as a 'satanic attack'
http://www.suntimes.com/lifestyles/religion/176532,CST-NWS-epis18.article

FAIRFAX, Va. -- Two of the most prominent and largest Episcopal parishes in Virginia voted overwhelmingly Sunday to leave the Episcopal Church and join fellow Anglican conservatives forming a rival denomination in the United States.

Truro Church in Fairfax and the Falls Church in Falls Church plan to place themselves under the leadership of Anglican Archbishop Peter Akinola of Nigeria, who has called the growing acceptance of gay relationships a ''satanic attack'' on the church.

1. They must really, really hate gay people
to "place themselves under the leadership of Anglican Archbishop Peter Akinola of Nigeria"!! Their tiny little heads must be about to explode!

2. Yikes, my sister went to Truro....
Edited on Mon Dec-18-06 04:16 PM by Hell Hath No Fury
back in the day when she had a tiny nervous breakdown and became a born-again "christian". I was there when my sister and her husband said their church marriage vows (they had been married for years, just not in the church) and the whole congregation looked at me like I had two heads when I would not say the prayers aloud. :eyes:

I went to breakfast to Denny's afterwards with them and the choir mistress and her family. They were the kind of "christians" who praised Jesus over everything -- "The scrambled eggs are delicious, praise Jesus!" (and no, I am not kidding, the chior mistress actually said that). They gave me the heebejeebies. :scared:

When she finally turned to me and asked me if I had excepted Jesus into my life, 12 years of Catholic school impishness rushed over me and I told her no, I was a very happy pagan. :D My sister was not amused.

My sister regained her sanity a few years later and is now a happy Buddhist.

On edit: Clarence Thomas goes to Truro for services -- that tells you all you need to know about how crazy they are.

15. I was really worried about her...
there for a few years. When someone stops acting and sounding like the person you grew up with, it gets a little scary -- it felt like she had been replaced by a pod.

17. Sorry for the late reply.
My in-laws moved to Oklahoma and became rabid Southern Baptists. My hubby says that aliens took their brains (or something).

12. They're obviously in the wrong denomination, then
They'll be happier as Southern Baptists or something.

16. They felt every classic fundie...
when I was visiting -- very into rapture/end times stuff. Not very Episcopalian in my experience.

13. Thanks for that tale
I used to live near Truro and was always curious about the church. I almost attended, at a point when I still considered myself Christian. Now, I am quite glad I didn't darken their doorstep.

3. Truro Church is a 300 year old congregation...
George Washington attended that church. Apparently they haven't evolved much socially.

4. This all gets interesting when they try to claim ownership
of the Church buildings and other property that the Episcopal Diocese has legal claim to.
There was a similar fight in Rochester, NY recently. After a year of courtroom battles, the judge held that the Episcopal Church rightfully owns the building. The ugly part is just starting.

5. Na, the ugly part is the hatred that is at cause for the split
The part that is just getting started is the messy part. The entire issue is already chalk full of ugly.

14. Oh yeah.
Both Truro and the Falls Church are sitting on multimillion-dollar pieces of property. Hell, FC got the city to close a street and a shopping center a few years ago to make it easier for their parishoners to park. Guess that sort of shit is going to end quickly.

I was expecting to read that these churches were in Norfolk or Gate City.
