I hereby challenge all Free Republic members to do something
Edited on Mon Dec-18-06 05:12 PM by Mortos
to benefit charity like Democratic Underground is with America's Second Harvest. I believe that, in this season of giving, groups of people with different political ideals should set aside their differences and use the power of their membership to do good for the community and society.

So, what do you say Free Republic. I know you guys check out this site just like we check out yours. The administrators of this site are doing something noble and good as our the members. I believe your group can too.

Pick a charity, put it up on the front page of FreeRepublic.com and lets have a friendly little competition to see who can give the most.

You notice I didn't call you names or mock your site or members. I sincerely would like to see some mutual good come out of our differences.

Here, for the members of DU is a link to our charity:

I think feeding the poor and underprivileged is a very Christ-like thing to do. I am proud of DU and prouder to be a member of this community for good.

1. Excellent challenge! Our local Food Bank my charity of choice, and they're part of
Second Harvest.

2. Thanks Mortos, excellent idea
I've placed myself on a "timeout" from trashing conservatives (on their sites) during this holiday season. A few buck here and a few bucks there and before you know it we all have done something good and nobody needs to know about it.

3. Don't expect too much from them
Freepers as a general rule tend to be quite selfish. How often do you see them walk by homeless people and tell them to get a job? If and when they do decide to contribute, they generally prefer to donate it to their church, and let the church decide who deserves help.

4. But, it's their fault that they are poor and hungry
Edited on Mon Dec-18-06 05:27 PM by central scrutinizer
Why should I help them when I need new mudflaps for my Hummer? Didn't you get the memo? Poverty and hunger are the results of bad choices. Like choosing the wrong parents as a newborn.

6. Thanks
I wonder if there will be any response. Keep this kicked for a while to see if the members of Free Republic can take us on in a straight up contest to see who has the more generous members.

they support the bastard, they should sack up and do their part

9. Toys for Tots
I noticed this on their homepage: "The U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys For Tots Program Toys for Tots was founded by Major Bill Hendricks-with the support of the Marine Corps Reserve Unit in Los Angeles in 1947! At that time, they collected 5,000 toys for needy children. It was so successful that in 1948 the Marine Corps adopted it and expanded it nationwide as the U.S. MARINE CORPS RESERVE TOYS FOR TOTS PROGRAM. The Toys For Tots program is the Marine Corps' premier community action program. Click here to learn how you can help in your area or to make a donation!"

Not sure if they're pushing it like DU is getting behind the Second Harvest donation drive.

10. I looked on their site
and didn't notice the Toys for Tots campaign prominently listed anywhere. Maybe I missed it. I was hoping for something trackable to spur competition.

It doesn't appear to me, by responses, that DU is getting behind this mission as wholeheartedly as I hoped. When Skinner posts the numbers later today, we should see how we are doing. I hope I am wrong.
