Gov. Orders Staff To Fix Lethal Injection Methods

(CBS/AP) SACRAMENTO Governor Schwarzenegger has ordered his staff to fix the state's lethal injection procedures in response to a federal judge's decision. The judge ruled last week that California's lethal injection method is unconstitutionally cruel.

In an effort to improve California's lethal injection protocol, the Governor's staff will begin a screening process for execution team members and also provide them with program training. The staff will also offer recommendations on how to improve the death penalty facility and turn to experts from other states for advice on lethal injection procedures.

"I am committed to doing whatever it takes to ensure that the lethal injection process is constitutional so that the will of the people is followed and the death penalty in maintained in California," said Governor Schwarzenegger. "My administration will take immediate action to resolve court concerns which have cast legal doubt on California's procedure for carrying out the death penalty."
