ACLU Fights Rhode Island Abstinence Only Program

(Providence, Rhode Island) The American Civil Liberties Union of Rhode Island said Monday that the state Department of Education had failed to adequately review a harmful abstinence-only-until-marriage curriculum developed by a conservative group before letting it back into schools.

“If Heritage is unable to comply with state standards for comprehensive sexuality education then it is up to the Department of Education to pull the curriculum from the schools,” said ACLU of Rhode Island Executive Director Steven Brown. “Its failure to do so puts teens at risk for unintended pregnancy and STDs, and undermines the state’s non-discrimination protections for gay and lesbian students.”

The nonprofit Heritage of Rhode Island had been offering its program to schools throughout the state free of charge. Funding came from a $400,000-a-year grant from the Administration for Children and Families of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

One parent complained to the American Civil Liberties Union which took the issue to the Department of Education. The ACLU pointed out that the curriculum was filled with misinformation, sexist stereotypes and discriminatory attitudes towards gay and lesbian families.

1. Try not to think of a polar bear...
So what happens? You think of a freaking polar bear. If you tell someone not to have sex until you are married, blah blah blah... What's going to happen. That person is going to get curious and probably engage in sexual affairs. Especially with the hormone machine churning over time.

Damn, don't these people get it?

3. Abstinence-only education is useless unless you want Mississippi's teen pregnancy rates. n/t
