Roberts: America wakes to dying dreams, dead soldiers

Cokie Roberts and Steven V. Roberts, NEWSPAPER ENTERPRISE ASSOCIATION
Monday, December 18, 2006

Cheektowaga, N.Y.; Thibodaux, La.; Pflugerville, Texas; Presque Isle, Maine; Westerville, Ohio; Marysville, Wash.; Redding, Calif.; Stokesdale, N.C.; Bapchule, Ariz.; Oxford, Ala.

These are the hometowns of 10 American troops killed recently in Iraq, 10 of almost 3,000 fatalities. And there will be many more. The good folks of Pflugerville and Westerville and Marysville no longer believe their sons and daughters are dying for a good reason, but President Bush seems in no mood to hear them.

Yes, he fired Donald Rumsfeld. And yes, he will announce next year "a new way forward." But listen carefully. It's clear the president is not really interested in a "new way" at all. He still firmly believes that his old way is right, that the war was justified, that "victory" is the only way to keep Stokesdale safe.

---snip---

But the president has not only lost the "battle for hearts and minds" across the Arab world, he's lost it across the United States. The people of Bapchule and Oxford no longer believe his words or trust his judgment. Virtually everything he ever said to them about the war — from "Mission Accomplished" to "absolutely, we're winning" — has been wrong.

---snip---

The nation is facing an enormous tragedy. Bush can't or won't leave Iraq, but staying means Pflugerville will keep burying its children. Only a new president will be able to stop the dying.

Edited on Tue Dec-19-06 12:34 PM by tblue37
She savaged Gore, and when asked about why on TV, she said the press knew Gore wasn't the liar--and that Bush was--but they savaged Gore instead because, in her words, "It was so much more fun to go after Gore." They really do think they are the Kewl Kidz clique in junior high school!

Oh, and add Maureen Dowd's anti-Gore and anti-Kerry snark to the list. She is just as bad.

I would love to smack every one of them upside the head--repeatedly.

20. No, we should welcome her
If we don't welcome those who change their hearts and minds, we'll never be able to effect change.

Aren't we out there -- and out here -- trying our very damnedest to change people's hearts and minds? Isn't Cokie Roberts' heart and mind good enough for you?

I don't know about you, Trajan, but I personally get tired of always preaching to the choir. I like to get out on the street corner once in a while and bring in the occasional convert.

I know that cokie has been carrying the kool-aid for quite awhile - however based on this editorial, someone has slipped caffine into her kool-aid and she's awake now.

back in 2000, during the "re-count" and immediately afterwards, those of us who were still upset were referred to as the "radical fringe" - (now you know where I got my name from and why the toons carry that name), we were also characterized as 15-percenters.. as if by calling us radical fringe and 15%-ers some how made us wrong

don't know about everyone else, but from the poll numbers, we aren't 15% anymore - we're a hellavalot higher now. and growing everyday with people like cokie finally waking up.

6. Cokehead Roberts is a mind-numbed robotic fool,whose
opinions, despite her high profile as a "political analyst," have exactly zero credibility. Her me-too conversion is of little value, given that it is, no doubt, no more than a cover to retain her right-wing extremist dumbass position at the feeding trough.

She is an inflexible dork, whom, obviously, I don't like - for good reason.

As far as I care to look, anyone who has waited until after the mid terms to declare a sudden epiphany has no stature as an opinion leader, merely being a political opportunist whose finger in the wind has determined which way to turn to be a total suck up.

Yes, the number of "born agains" has a little importance as regards the steamroller about to run over this evil administration, but where the hell was she when we really needed her?

9. How many people are familiar with the story her father, Hale Boggs,
the Democratic House Majority Leader was another Democrat who died in an airplane, this one over Alaska, with three others? From Wikipedia:
As Majority Leader, Boggs campaigned often for others. In October, 1972, he was aboard a twin engine Cessna 310 with Representative Nick Begich when it disappeared during a flight from Anchorage to Juneau, Alaska. Begich's aide and the pilot were the only others on board. The four were heading for a campaign fundraiser for Begich, who faced no opposition in the November 1972 general election.

In the largest search ever mounted by the US military, Coast Guard, Navy, and Air Force planes searched for the party. The search was abandoned after 39 days. The mens' remains were never found. The accident prompted Congress to pass a law mandating emergency locator transmitters (now called emergency position-indicating rescue beacons) in all U.S. civil aircraft.

Both Boggs and Begich were re-elected that November. House Resolution 1 of January 3, 1973 officially recognized Boggs's presumed death and opened the way for a special election.

The events surrounding Boggs's death have been the subject of numerous conspiracy theories. These theories often center around his involvement with the Warren Commission, but some tie his death to alleged corruption charges or his outspoken opposition to powerful FBI director J. Edgar Hoover. Some people, including several of Begich's children, have suggested that Richard Nixon had a hand in Boggs's death in order to thwart the Watergate investigation. None of these theories has ever been proven.

Conspiracy in the death would be virtually impossible, however, since it would involve convincing Don Jonz, the pilot, to kill himself along with his two passengers. He deliberately flew into known icing conditions, having written the lead article for Flying Magazine of November 1972, entitled "Ice Without Fear." In the article, Jonz boasted that 99% of the current wisdom regarding flying in icing conditions could be safely disregarded.

38. You know, I remember all those flags waving from almost
every car after 911, horns blowing. I remember the sense of outrage that some enemy would attack us like that! I remember how eager everyone was to strike back at somebody. I remember how the whole congress assembled together on the steps and sang (was it) God Bless America? and rallied round "the war president!"

We have been through it all before. Patriotic Americans ready to send their sons and daughters (now) off to war to avenge the savage blow. Then when the body bags start coming in in droves and there is no discernable result of all the carnage, the war hysteria cools and turns to disgust.

Why can't we ever learn?

No, tell me she didn't say that.

http://www.geocities.com/thereaganyears/reaganquotes.htm

Good to see Cokie finally changed her tune for whatever reason. We should welcome this in her as an individual. Maybe she'll vote for Democrats now and perhaps even post here some time. But get her off the air. Just as many others have done, she has shown that she is not qualified to opine on 'news' programs where she has been in a position to sway public opinion.

It would save a lot of time to identify which media pundits have not soiled themselves with their unquestioning endorsement of the endless string of Junior's lies.
