Bank robbers in military uniforms stage heist in downtown Baghdad

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Gunmen in military uniforms raided a bank in downtown Baghdad on Tuesday morning, stealing more than one billion Iraqi Dinar (US$709,000 or Ð540,000), police said.

The robbery took place around 10:30 a.m. (0730 GMT) at the Zuwiyah Bank in Baghdad’s Karradah neighborhood. The attackers drove up in four vehicles, jumped out and started firing their weapons into the air, police said. They handcuffed guards outside the bank, then stole money from accountants working for the Ministry of Industry, police said. The incident took place in the bank’s doorway, as the accountants exited the building.

Police were investigating. The gunmen fled the scene, and their whereabouts and identities were unknown.
