US general issues warning: politics must not interfere with 100-year “war on terror”

By Bill Van Auken
19 December 2006

One of the Pentagon’s senior uniformed strategists warned last week that the “global war on terror” will go on for another 50 to 100 years and voiced concern that “politics” not be allowed to interfere with the protracted struggle.

The remarks were made by Brig. Gen. Mark O. Schissler, an Air Force commander and the Defense Department’s deputy director for the “war on terrorism.” He made them in an exclusive interview with the Washington Times, the right-wing daily owned by the Unification Church of Rev. Sun Myung Moon.

“We’re in a generational war,” he told the paper. “You can try and fight the enemy where they are and where they’re attacking you, or prevent them and defend your own homeland,” he said. “But that’s not enough to stop it.”

The Washington Times went on to report, “Gen. Schissler said he is concerned that Washington politics is weakening the will of the nation.”

1. people like this are bat-sh*t crazy, and shouldn't be allowed to be in power, IMO
statements like that reflect a fundamental paranoid psychosis, and should not be treated as rational observation, in my opinion, because a) it talks about fighting an abstract concept for the next 100 years (another hundred-year war, anyone?); and b) it misses the point that the so-called 'War on Terror' has actually created MORE terrorism that it has eradicated, and is therefore contrarian, tautological and (most importantly) delusional.

2. Reminds me of atom bomb alerts in the 5th grade;

we all got under desks because the Commies were coming.

Ironically, the radioactive drift from test bombs in Nevada and Utah got more of my peers than the Commies did.

5. Without a doubt...
I'd guarantee it to happen, especially when Junior does a purge of the Joint Chiefs to get rid of those who aren't on board with him.

Wasn't the air force academy taken over by fundaloons? These folks are insane. Luckily we have just put them in charge of vastly dangerous weapons, lots of vastly dangerous weapons.

Edited on Tue Dec-19-06 09:16 AM by obreaslan
They can do what these wussy politicians are afraid to do. We can't get the job done in the next hundred years with these bastards in D.C. We need to have someone with the guts to drop a nuke on every country in the world that supports these brown peopl...err...uh...terrorists, to be running the show from now on.

10. I read this sentence:
One of the Pentagon’s senior uniformed strategists... as, "one of the Pentagon's senior UNINFORMED strategists..."

Then when I read the rest of the piece, I realized I was actually correct.

I think Schissler is weakening the intellectual capacity of the nation. What a dolt! How do guys like this ever get to be generals?

14. Equally disconcerting
is the fact that there is little resistance to within Congress to restrain these lunatics and little evidence that a mass movement in the streets is going to stop this insanity.

The Air Force is infested and most likely its loyalty compromised by religious zealots.

13. Note to Marko:
Even though you're in the Air Force, a hero like you should grab a gun & join "The Surge." Ride on convoys to show the 'boys' how it's done 'right.'

Go fuck yourself.

16. 50-100 years
Wrong-o, Batman! The "Global War on Terror" will last for an eternity. There will always be an enemy that falls under the label of terrorist. There will always be a struggle that has advocates for war warning that we must fight for our survival.

Instead of "Global War on Terror", let's just call it what it really is: The Eternal War.

23. Shouldn't high brass have at least a passing familiarity with von Clausewitz?
Wars are instruments of politics, and are always governed by political realities, even in the most militatized societies. Any general that forgets this is in for some unpleasant surprises.

And, of course the 'War on Terror' is a slogan, and not an actual war.
