DETROIT — Buying big, luxurious sport-utility vehicles could cost a lot less under the Bush administration's economic stimulus proposal, even though a Bush appointee blasted SUVs last week as dangerous fuel hogs.

August 24, 2005- Bush Drive to Save Fuel Fails to Include Cars and Biggest SUVs
The Bush administration yesterday put forward a plan to make the US's burgeoning fleet of pickup trucks, minivans and some sports utility vehicles go further on a gallon of gas in response to the soaring cost of petrol.
But the plan, which would not be implemented until 2008, was condemned by environmental groups because the largest SUVs, such as the Hummer H2, would not be affected. It would also not affect cars.

"To produce more energy at home, we need to open up new areas to environmentally responsible exploration for oil and natural gas, including the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge -- that's called ANWR. (Applause.) The Department of Interior estimates that we could recover more than 10 billion barrels of oil from a small corner of ANWR that was reserved specifically for energy development. That's the same amount of new oil we could get from 41 states combined. Thanks to advances in technology -- and Sam was briefing me on what he saw, he just went up there to look at the technology that would be used -- we can now reach all of ANWR's oil by drilling on just 2,000 acres."
