Wounded Soldier To Get His Smile Back POSTED: 2:55 pm PST December 12, 2006 UPDATED: 5:10 pm PST December 12, 2006 SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- A soldier, wounded in Iraq, traveled from his home in Yuma to San Diego Tuesday to take the first step in getting his smile back. It's hard to believe Sgt. Frank Sandoval has anything to smile about. His convoy was attacked in Iraq on Nov. 28, 2005. When an IED exploded near his Humvee, Sandoval, a gunner, was critically injured. Shrapnel was embedded in Sandoval's brain and surgeons removed a third of his brain and half of his skull to save his life. Now, Sandoval, 26, is able to stand, even walk with help. Speech is still difficult but he has regained many of his cerebral functions with the exception of short-term memory. Sandoval's father told a friend about his son's injuries and his missing teeth. That friend worked for Poway dentist Bruce Johnson. When Johnson heard the story, he agreed to donate his time to give Sandoval dental implants and repair the soldier's smile lost more than a year ago. The first step in the long procedure was X-rays taken Tuesday. It will take several months before the implants are in place. Sandoval's wife Michelle and his 4-year old daughter Joelena said they all have something to smile about. "He's going to be rewarded for what he sacrificed," said Mich

1. OMG! It's hard to imagine surviving that.
I hope the rest of his brain can adapt and compensate for the missing third.

18. I took care of someone who had lost both frontal lobes
There was no way this guy could get a job, but he could walk, talk, feed and dress himself, and live on his own with some help. He couldn't balance a checkbook or write, but he could function on a reasonable level.

You'd be surprised what the VA can do with injuries like that. Two years from now, this kid will have a prosthetic skull implanted and the shape of his head will probably be so normal you won't recognize him as a head injury patient. He'll have personality changes his family will notice but he'll be able to take care of himself.

The brain is remarkably adaptable, but only if people get intensive rehab. That's one of the things the VA system does best.

And all for a lie
It would be one thing to get injured like this if the war was legitimate, but it's not it's based on a lie. It's terrible to see things like this.

Enveloped in a sentiment,
A sound that rushes over me.
Engage an impulse to pretend
I have a faith as pure.
Not forgetting what it means to dream.
Indulging everything.
Entertaining thoughts that I've the strength
Of those I yearn to be.
Cheers and tribute greet the saviours.
Reckless thoughts survive.
Anachronistic and impulsive.

And what will happen?
Will I dream?
I am too scared to close my eyes.
For a second please hold me.
None can change in me these things that I believe.
But I don't know what happens now.
I am too scared to close my eyes.

4. Advances in medical technology
is the only reason the death toll isn't in the 15-20,000 range like its bastard parent Vietnam. And some of the survivors will come to envy the dead. ;(

24. That is so very true.
So many will come to envy those who died, and make efforts to join them, and because the VA is sliced, diced, and minimized, they will not get the help necessary. Many, many, many more will die in the coming years, all for the frivolous notions of Bush and his ilk.

Without a short term memory how much chance has he of ever becoming a productive member of society? I'm not saying he's not worth anything if he isn't productive, but there's an immense amount of self esteem and dignity involved in managing to contribute and produce, instead of having to rely on kindness and charity. Society will tell him endlessly that while he may be a 'hero', but he won't be a man unless he can support his family - that he has been wounded in war be damned. They'll pat him on his back, rob him of his benefits, reduce any help he gets, let him sink or swim on his own (most likely sink), let his family try to carry the burden, and then blame them if he fails.

8. He's going to be "rewarded"?
In ten or twenty years, when his parents are dead and his wife is remarried with kids of her own, maybe his daughter will visit him in the nursing home and remind him of what a hero he is and how he got there. This really pisses me off.

Trout couldn't tell one politician from another one. They were all formlessly enthusiastic chimpanzees to him. He wrote a story one time about an optimistic chimpanzee who became President of the United States. He called it "Hail to the Chief."
The chimpanzee wore little blue blazer with brass buttons, and with the seal of the President of the United States sewed to the breast pocket.

Everywhere he went, bands would play "Hail to the Chief." The chimpanzee loved it. He would bounce up and down.

My dad was shot in the head in Belgium in WWII. They are survivable and recoverable. Good luck to Sgt Sandoval and his family.
