My Letter To Sen. Harry Reid On His Support Of "Surge" In Iraq - Please Write Too
Susan_McCue@reid.senate.gov is e-mail address. She is executive secretary to Senator Harry Reid. Please be polite in your message. Rudeness will destroy your credibility.

Dear Sen. Reid,
I was sadly surprised and disappointed to find out that you are willing to see a time-limited "surge" of American troops sent to Iraq.

Generals like Colin Powell and other distinguished military leaders say that a surge would only kill more American troops and more innocent Iraqi people, and would not create a way for us to leave Iraq as victors.

Other active-duty generals have gone on record as saying that such a surge needs at least 18 months to fully implement and see results.

"Eighteen months" has a familiar ring to it--it is almost two years long, a period of time that would enable Mr. Bush to "stay the course" until he leaves the oval office for the last time. In this way, he will never have to say he lost the war. He would sacrifice our troops and sustain collateral damage, just to be able to save face. This pride-riddled boy would gladly sacrifice more lives to save his pride.

We Democrats worked hard to win the last election. One of our goals was to put someone in office who would work for diplomacy and peace. This war has ruined our standing in the Middle-East and the rest of the world. This war has cost America our reputation as "good guys". We continue to torture people, some of whom are innocent. We spy on our own citizens. We spy on Peace Mongers. We are losing our pride, as Mr. Bush polishes his "tough-guy" image.

To be candid--and with all due respect--I did not vote a straight democratic ticket only to hear our leader in the Senate opine about sending more troops to Baghdad, to die.

At my age (old enough to remember WWII) I can only conclude that diplomacy is best, and war should be a last resort. I do not wish to send one more person into battle, nor do I want one more Iraqi civilian to die because a shallow, vainglorious despot refuses to change course.

We Democrats must be able to stop this war immediately and bring our troops home. It is bad enough that we have moved so far right that our very democracy has been threatened.

We voted for Democrats to bring our troops home, and certainly not to add insult to injury. Mr. Reid, I write this letter to remind you why we voted for your party. and to ask you to reconsider.

I'll be looking forward to your reply.

Sincerely yours,
