17. Drink and chew tobacco...
Edited on Tue Dec-19-06 01:19 PM by hughee99
It's certainly no healthier than smoking, but I don't have to listen to people spewing those second hand smoking statistics at me, no one can claim I'm hurting them, and I don't even have to leave my desk, let alone go outside, for a "break". I feel bad for the smokers who have to put up with all of that.

I take it you're referring to the jackass from the Huffington post. I found it interesting that the same person who said this...
"In that one act, they lose all progressive cred with me.
They have surrendered their value system for the cigarette in their hand.
A cigarette most likely branded and marketed by an international conglomerate- the same type of international conglomerate so many of these same people I just described absolutely hate.
A cigarette made by an international conglomerate whose products poison and have killed millions both here and abroad.
Cigarettes made by American corporations who mostly contribute campaign funds to conservative Republicans- the same politicians who stand for everything progressives are against and stand against everything progressives are for."

Also has links to Walmart.com (who's selling his book) and Charles Schwab (where he's on the payroll) on his personal website.

that's gross, it's the spitting.

However, a plastic cup of chew spit (to a very drunk person) looks like it could be Guiness. Get 'em to drink that and hilarity ensues!

18. Could I join if I do neither?
It has absolutely NOTHING to do with what *I* do ... and everything to do with whether I support the liberties of others to do things I may consider stupid ... even when it causes me some discomfort or inconvenience.

People talk about the risk to their health as though this is some HUGE eeeevil. Well, I'm a veteran. As such, I know a little bit about vigorously protesting and opposing stupidity and still putting my life on the line for the sake of the right to be stupid - and it has NOTHING to do with whether that particular exercise in neocolonialism was 'right' or 'wrong.'

For me, being liberal is ALL about sharing the 'costs' of the behavior of others. It's inconvenient. It's uncomfortable. It's even life-threatening. (Give me liberty or give me death!)

93. Have you seen the movie Serenity, TahitNut?
If you have, you remind me of Capt Reynolds after he and the crew had seen the horror on Miranda. "They'll swing back to the belief that they can make people ... better."

If not, you should. You'd like the basic idea.

128. Nope - haven't heard of it, but I just looked in IMDB.
It looks like it might be fun ... and a bit campy. It's apparently written on the canceled TV series "Firefly" (which I've also not seen). I'll check it out when I get a chance.

135. I wouldn't call it campy.
If you can, start with Firefly, then the film. Serenity can stand on its own, but the series gives a lot of motivation and character background. Plus, the series has some great moments. One episode starts with our hero in the middle of a desert, blue jay nekkid. He's looking off into middle distance. He sighs and says "That went well." What a terrific way to kick off a story.

49. I smoke
But I only drink maybe once or twice a year. It's ok though, I quit having cred cold turkey. I feel much better now that I am credless. I can fart in public, on elevators even, and not have to worry about anything (well except maybe striking a match). Two years being credless and counting!

I already mentioned, also a few posts up, that I don't 'bitch' about paying what I pay for health care - and that leaves me out of your group of 'fucking smokers' who 'bitch.'

Most alcoholics are in denial, IMO, but still get health coverage.
But where do you draw the line in denying health coverage due to risky behavior? Mountain climbing? Motorcycles? Snake-handling? Trans-fats?
If there were universal health coverage in this country and my smoking did not impact you whatsoever, would you still want to deny coverage?

employer insurance exactly twice. I take zero prescription drugs and sure as hell don't get much bang for the $756 a year 'employee contribution' I make to pay for the insurance. I also carry a separate policy for heart attack and cancer excessive costs. The insurance companies love me and doctors are astounded that I'm not pumping 6 or 7 'brand name' drugs into my body.

Go run your own life and leave the rest of us alone.

Drive an SUV because we have 5 children and 5 dogs. However I don't have to work out of the home, so I actually use less gas then most people do.

I don't get off hating people to make myself feel better. I guess having so many living things depending on you helps you see life in that aspect. Silly so much hate right in the middle of the holiday season. My non smoking oldest daughter and I sponsored a family for Christmas. Single mom with 3 kids and we got those kids want then wanted Santa to bring them. I never wondered if mom was a smoker, drinker, suv driver or drug addict. Damn those liberal traits...

I am a card carrying member of the Liberal Democratic Party - might not have progressive credentials but smart enough to understand liberal means tolerance of others - not sure why some construe liberal to mean the right to rip my own cigarette from my own mouth.

And, yes, I misspelled drink on purpose to add some humour to your day :)

146. Damn. I quit smoking. But I'll do my part & just drink more to make up for it!

Still, though, a drink's not near as good without a cigarette.

156. I drink, smoke, eat meat AND fart in public but I don't drive
Overall, my contribution to global warming, pollution etc. is still less than that of the average progressive fart-sniffer so neener neener neeeenerr.
