Ms. Hoover

There is still anger about a racially charged poem that appeared in a student-run magazine at Tufts University. Saturday, students staged a rally, to call attention to racism on campus.

Last week, the "Primary Source" published a parody of a Christmas carol called "Come All Ye Black Folk." The editor, Allison Hoover, said the carol was supposed to be a "tongue-in-cheek" attack on affirmative action.

Written from the point of view of a Tufts admissions officer, the carol has lines like "boisterous yet desirable" and "no matter what your grades are F's, D's or G's give them privileged status".

"This senate does not have the luxury of remaining silent on matters that degrade any members of this campus because of their background, racial and otherwise," said Mitchell Robinson, the student senate president.

"Many people interpret this carol as having crossed the line from making fun of a harmful institution to making fun of the black race. This was not my intention," said Allison Hoover, the magazine's editor in chief.

27. It implies that all black students are byproducts of an unjust affirmative action program.
So, if all the black students at the University are indeed e,f, or g students, then this is certainly good satire. However, as it stands, I'd be pissed if I was a black student at the school/or a decent person. The song is satire-of a song. It's also a racist satire. Satire can be racist. Maybe they'll teach that next semester. There are plenty of ways you can attack affirmative action without singling out one minority group and making broad, negative implications against them.

31. Funds are handed out over a semester or a year.
The paper isn't going to disappear over night. The only control they could have over firing the editor is either vested in the University by-laws or a suspension of funds until she steps down. Which is tantamount to censorship and stifling the press-which I wouldn't support. It's college. Lets some numb skull editor make a bad decision. The reaction is far more interesting and educational then the action. I'm curious if she'll stay on or recuse herself. It was a bad decision on her part-regardless of how she feels about affirmative action. I think it's important for people to distinguish and realize that you can be wrong even if your cause is noble. Nobody ever makes mistakes anymore-it just comes down to what side they''re on and not backing down.

She made a mistake. I'm curious if the righties on the campus will acknowledge it.

36. I disagree. Saying "we can't censor racist literature" when some of the
support for the paper comes from the victims themselves is just wrong. NPR or public TV should not be permitted to air a racist poem either. Freedom of speech means I am free to publish a racist poem but it doesn't mean the victim has to pay for it. No way no how. That is wrong.

41. I don't support censorship.
I also find racist articles like the "satire" entertaining and encourage all right wing idiots to publish their thoughts. It makes winning elections easier and easier. I understand and respect your view point.

Do me a favor though, just for a moment. Laugh at racism like this. Don't let it anger you. It's really just ridiculous. And when they defend it, it becomes even funnier. This is a classic example of why right wing types oppose affirmative action. They honestly believe that all black students at a college are F students from the ghetto who don't deserve to be there. Instead of getting mad at them, we should ask them to expound on their thoughts.

400 conservative students meet
By Alison Hoover
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
August 2, 2006

More than 400 conservative college students from across the country have gathered in Washington for a week of speeches, seminars and strategy.
The National Conservative Student Conference offers a chance to "hear a different point of view than on campus," said Taylor Stanford, a senior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Young America's Foundation (YAF) is sponsoring the event at George Washington University.
The conference aims to "help these students learn more about the conservative movement," said Patrick Coyle, director of campus programs at YAF.
Featuring a slate of more than 30 conservative heavyweights such as former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and columnist Michelle Malkin, the conference exposes students to a range of speakers representing various aspects of conservatism, and they don't all agree on every issue, Mr. Coyle said.

If there is a group worse than the College Republicans its the YAF. They used to write borderline racist crap all over my old college campus in chalk at night. No wonder that they have ties to the John Birch Society.

Sad to say, but the tradition of giving favoritism to "legacies" (i.e. children of alumni), particularly those whose parents are able to fund construction of that new science building, is still quite ingrained at most of the "prestige" colleges in the northeast.

As I have mentioned before, I attended a "prep" boarding school. Never were the class distinctions more evident than on April 15th, when college acceptance letters arrived, and we found out that moneyed students who could have practically invented the term "slacker" had been accepted to the big-name universities like Harvard, Yale, and Princeton, while those who had actually shown some degree of academic performance but whose family had not founded one of the major northeast cities got nothing but the dreaded thin envelopes.

Besides, isn't Tufts the only school in the country with an elephant as its mascot? (And a circus elephant at that -- the one and only Jumbo, whose stuffed remains were displayed at Tufts until the building housing them burned down in the mid-'70s. :eyes: )

What does it say about the admissions process of this particular college if the white students who attend that school do not even understand what satire is. Simply saying something is "satire" does NOT automatically make it satire.

Apparently that's too much to expect from people like this.

I would imagine, based on all the right-wingers I've seen and known, hatred does block deeper, more important levels of intelligence and creativity. They don't seem to function when hatred and spite are in charge of the would-be writer.

29. So a bunch of idiotic students are now basically KKKers?
Holy shit, some of you people are so puritanical it's unbeliveble.

I remember student magazines in university ALWAYS publishing offensive, crude and occasionally libelous text and pictures. These magazines were usually run by a ragtag bunch of sometimes smart, sometimes dumb sudents who were always trying to stir up trouble and/or debate and/or controversy and/or sales. Plus ca change.

But according to this latest explosion of DU outrage, it seems that young people need to be fully-formed not only in their sense of humour but also in their political views come the age of 18 or 19 or they are borderline KKK.

Wow. Tough crowd.

(Although I do readily conceed that the line about "No matter what your grades are, F's, D's or G's
Give them privileged status..." is pretty goddam offensive, and it would be easier for me to make my contrarian argument if that line weren't in there. And given I also conceed that the controversy could make black students feel uncomfortable - at very best - I guess my point in this post is more about general princples.).

It is one thing to publish crude offensive sophomoric material. That is par for the course with student newspapers. But when a piece crosses the line into racism, sexism, homophobia - whatever - the writers and editors need to be held accountable. There is no constitutional right to be a racist, sexist, or homophobic boor on someone else's dime.
