OK, Kucinich supporters, what has he accomplished
in Congress that makes you think he'd be a good president? I ask this because of a comparison that I brought up between Bernie Sanders and Dennis Kucinich on the thread linked below. I think there are different kinds of progressivism. I said that I preferred Bernie's brand to Kucinich's. (yeh, yeh, I know Bernie's not running for Prez, that's not my chief point)

That got me to thinking; what has Kucinich accomplished in Congress? I know he proposed legislation to form a Department of Peace, and legislation to ban all nukes, but what legislation or amendments has he proposed beyond that, and equally importantly, what has he actually gotten passed?

Beyond what he says in speeches that you like, what has he accomplished? Or if that doesn't matter to you, what is it about him that inspires your devotion?

Edited on Tue Dec-19-06 03:49 PM by QuestionAll...
that was at all positive for americans as a whole, over the last 6 years.

or...
who Supported or did not support things like the
bankruptcy bill and
'it's okay to torture'.
.etc.

should Kucinich only have something to prove?
let's see everyone's records. I'm up for that.

3. I'd be glad to answer that.
Here's my post from the other thread about what Bernie's accomplished. Also, how long has Kucinich been in Congress? What were his Congressional accomplishments prior to 2000?

Bernie's been my rep for 15 years or so. I'm glad to tell you what I like about his politics. Bernie is grounded in the nitty gritty. He offered few, (if any) lofty bills, and many practical amendments. In the era of repuke control, some have passed, many have not.

Here's a bit from a RS article about Bernie and his meticulous work on offering amendments to bad legislation:

I had no way of knowing that Sanders would be a perfect subject for another, more compelling reason. In the first few weeks of my stay in Washington, Sanders introduced and passed, against very long odds, three important amendments. A fourth very nearly made it and would have passed had it gone to a vote. During this time, Sanders took on powerful adversaries, including Lockheed Martin, Westinghouse, the Export-Import Bank and the Bush administration. And by using the basic tools of democracy -- floor votes on clearly posed questions, with the aid of painstakingly built coalitions of allies from both sides of the aisle -- he, a lone Independent, beat them all.

Now if you follow the link, you'll see that the repukes managed to roll back the amendments, but that's not my point. Another snippet from the article:

Sanders is the amendment king of the current House of Representatives. Since the Republicans took over Congress in 1995, no other lawmaker -- not Tom DeLay, not Nancy Pelosi -- has passed more roll-call amendments (amendments that actually went to a vote on the floor) than Bernie Sanders. He accomplishes this on the one hand by being relentlessly active, and on the other by using his status as an Independent to form left-right coalition.

http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/7539869/four_ame...

An example of Sander's activism is that he was the first legislator to take a bus load of seniors across the border to Canada to purchase prescription drugs, as a way of bringing to public attention the obscene way big pharma conducts business in the U.S.

I don't know as much about Kucinich's legislative history, but it seems to be much more about big ideas- like a department of Peace, that I see as more symbolic than realistic. Bernie doesn't make a lot of those kinds of proposals or speeches- he's too busy working on things that effect the daily lives of his constituents and all Americans, right now.

Part of it's style, too, I confess. I like Bernie's down to earth blunt style better than Kucinich's tinged with new ageism style.

5. then convince him to run. sounds like a good sort.
I guess I wasn't clear in my last post.

I would like to see a voting record and accomplishment list on all the democrats that have, or most likely will, be throwing their hat in the ring.

Project Vote Smart. You can find voting records there, and more on most of the dems running or thinking of running. There's another site, that I'm blanking on at the moment that I like even better. I'll see if I can find it. As for Bernie, he's never gonna run for Pres; he was just elected to the Senate and he's 65 years old.

SENATOR HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON REPEATEDLY REFUSED TO PROVIDE ANY
RESPONSES TO CITIZENS ON ISSUES THROUGH THE 2006

Key national leaders of both major parties including:

Geraldine Ferraro, Former Democratic Congresswoman
Michael Dukakis, Former Democratic Governor

Richard Kimball, Project Vote Smart President

Over 100 news organizations throughout the nation also urged their candidates to supply their issue positions through the National Political Awareness Test.

I'll have to see if there are many others that refuse, but kneejerk reaction is Not Good.

Urge Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton to pass the National Political Awareness Test.

7. Thanks, Will.
The long list, I gather, is simply a compilation of his votes on varying legislation. Do you happen to know what legislation or amendments, he's introduced, beyond such proposals as the creation of a Dept. of Peace or banning all nukes? Perhaps you could steer me in the right direction so I can find some info on that.

12. Thank you so much.
That is really helpful. This thread would be very useful to Kucinich supporters. Hopefully some of them will have the opportunity to see it.

28. Are you offering
me a cigarette? No, thanks. Don't smoke. Been thinking about starting a thread to see how other DUers feel about the topic. But with all the important things going on, I am not sure if a smoking thread would get any attention.

15. heproposed the dept of peace and opposed the iraq war from the beginning.
that's for starters. and that's enough to show guts and integrity that are sorely lacking in agreat many other Democratic leaders that are *acceptable.* except they're totally unacceptable corporate toadies to me.

19. I'm actually not that
enamored with the proposal for a Department of Peace- sounds vaguely Orwellian, and its one of those grand sweeping proposals that I don't think mean very much, but I do appreciate his introducing legislation regarding GMOs and paper ballots for Presidential elections. The thing is, I just don't see a lot in his legislative record, so far, that impresses me. It may or may not show guts to introduce legislation that doesn't stand a chance of passing, but it doesn't accomplish anything for anyone. That's why I think the comparison between what Bernie has accomplished and what Kucinich has accomplished is so stark.

23. Actually, I think the idea of a Department of Peace is misguided.
I'm not sure what its mandate would be. Would the SecPax simply show up to every cabinet meeting and say, "you know, I think peace is a good option here?" Or would it simply be a Department of Foreign Policy With An Emphasis On Peace? Because we already have one, and we call its head the Secretary of State.

Under a hawkish administration, the SecStat would be a hawk, and the SecPax would be marginalized and ignored. Under a dovish administration, the SecStat and SecPax would be redundant. I just don't get the need.

25. This is what his campaign web page says
Kucinich has advocated the creation of a cabinet-level Department of Peace, to make non-violence an organizing principle within our society. He believes that peace, not war, is inevitable, if we are willing to work for peace. He sees the world as being interconnected and interdependent. This vision always strives to find the commonalities, the points where unity can be formed

Just FYI.

26. Yeah, I've seen that, but I still can't think of any mandate it would hold.
What would its unique jurisdiction be? What tasks would it perform that are not already performed by other governmental agencies? Or is this a DHS-style overhaul of the federal bureaucracy, streamlining things a bit but otherwise more for show than effect?

21. Not so.

-From Rolling Stone

But then, as I recall, you don't have any use for Sanders either.

20. When there was a field of 9 candidates for Dem04
He consistently answered every question just the right way. take the question which one of you can beat *. Everybody else said that only that candidate could beat Bush, But K castigated the press for such a stupid question and said that in reality any of them could beat him becasue he had accomplished nothing. it was soon after this that the press started hammering him. When it came down to it the press beat K with all of their "he can't win". And besides he was consistently anti-war even before besing so was consisered cool.
