Maybe smokers need their own DU group
I have to tell you the sanctimonious, holier than thou non-smoking crowd is really beginning to tick me off. What more do they fucking want from us? I can't smoke anywhere but in my car or house, and in some states not even there. My smoke is away from anyone who it could possibly annoy yet every time I log onto DU there is a new thread screaming about how I am costing people money, how I have no self control and how I stink. Let me inform you wonderful people of something. I know smoking is bad for me and I know I should quit and I probably will. But for now I FUCKING LIKE TO SMOKE. Deal with it. Or are there so many of us "progressives" that you can afford to alienate the ones who smoke? If my smoking is such an insult to your intelligence then stay away from me.
Now for the people who think I'm costing them money, I believe the $2.25 sin tax I pay, per pack will cove the cost of my quick and painful death of cancer, so shut-up.
For those who think I have no self control, well I have'nt punched any sanctimonious blowhards in the face lately and I think that shows much self control.
And for those who think I stink, well, let me tell you something. I would much rather walk into a public restroom and smell my smoke than smell your shit. So as soon as you stop shitting in public toilets, I'll stop smoking in public places. Oh wait, I don't smoke in public....

Apologies about yet another smoking thread but man I have had it up to here with this shit....

3. Aside from this one...
...I've just been staying away from the smoking threads. After the "dirtbag" comment in the thread last week I realized it just wasn't worth it and it was beginning to color my perception of DU in a way that I didn't like.

Although I'll say that I don't think DU smokers should have their own group. Why should we be segregated from DU in general? It's not like we're going to a non-smoker's house and smoking there or anything.

But I fully agree with you that putting up with scolds is getting pretty old. We're supposed to be the open-minded ones, aren't we?

6. I've been ignoring them - the non-smoking weenies are annoying
And the next time one of them marinates themselves in perfume and then goes out to a public restaurant smelling like a cheap whorehouse, I hope they get ragged on incessantly.

I'm fed up too, can you tell?

The folks spewing clouds of toxic, carcinogenic smoke...

Are actively working to poison the people around them.

Personally, I'd rather be just annoying.

10. Where exactly do I smoke that "poisons people"
Edited on Tue Dec-19-06 05:22 PM by walldude
Please tell me how smoking in the privacy of my car or house is poisoning people? Please I'm dying to know how cigarette smoke in my house is killing you.

16. Nice strawman you have there.
The issue has never been smoking in the privacy of one's car or house. The issue is and always has been smoking in public venues.

20. Well smoking is banned in public places
I have yet to see where it's not. Maybe it's different where you live but I travel for a living, I visited over 100 cities last year and couldn't smoke indoors in any of them. I believe it's you with the strawman my friend.

22. I still don't get it, TechBear.
There is NO SMOKING in public buildings, including restaurants and bars, in all of Washington state, except Indian casinos. It shouldn't even BE an issue anymore, since smokers CANNOT smoke in public buildings.

26. Sorry, you are wrong
"The issue has never been smoking in the privacy of one's car or house."

In the law they passed in Ohio, you are not allowed to smoke in your own home if it is a business and people come to your house during business hours. There was also a law they were trying to pass that made it illegal to smoke in your own car if you have minors with you.

27. When are you going to grow up
and realize that the car exhaust, factory emissions, radon in your house and the industrial and agricultural contaminants in your water are doing you far more harm than the smoker you pass on the street?

12. You are referring to smokers, right?
Seriously, why are smokers so santimonious and holier than thou in claiming that their right to poison everyone around them is more holy than our right not to be poisoned? That is the exact same logic used by the folks who run coal burning power plants or who feel free to dump PCBs into the water supply.

17. Amen, walldude.
There are so many places anymore where smoking is NOT allowed, that home and car are two of the few places where smokers CAN light up. How that harms someone in a restaurant or bar is beyond me.

9. Liberals aren't immune from sanctimonious pontification
There probably isn't a sub-group on the planet who have not been chided, put down or ridiculed here.
Wal-mart shoppers, meat eaters, Velveeta cheese lovers, drinkers, upscale department store shoppers,
home schoolers, far lefties, centrists........ the list goes on.

14. I get fed up with the judgmentalness I see here.
And it's not just against smokers. The threads I've seen where people are stomping all over the mountain climbers are disgusting. So are threads demonizing anyone who drives an SUV. And threads bashing people who don't toe whatever line someone thinks is the "correct" line to toe.

As to the smoking stuff, I used to smoke, but I am absolutely fed up too with the beating smokers are taking here. And some of the same people who waste their time bashing smokers are the same ones who bash the media for not covering the war more. It's very hypocritical.

If no one is blowing smoke in your face, then keep your mouth shut. If someone DOES blow smoke in your face, then deal with THEM. There's no need to kick everyone else about it.

15. I hear ya.
I can't even smoke in the smoking breakroom with seperate ventilation in my own store even though ALL my employees smoke, and no one has to use that room for any other purpose.

From what I've heard about the Ohio smoking ban, Columbus at least is interpreting no smoking "near the enterence" of any establishment as 25 feet. This means in any given urban retail district, you can't smoke ANYWHERE on the street.

Things have gone too far.

I DON'T WANT TO LEAVE JUST YET. And what gives you the fucking right to tell me I can't smoke? I don't smoke near anyone who it could harm, I don't smoke in public and if you want to stop me from doing something legal in the privacy of my own home you better damn well better have a better line than "Cigaretteville is a ghost town".

29. Non-smokers are not the ones starting most of these threads
How many times do I need a post from smoker calling me 'sanctimonious, holier than thou'. Damn right I'm gonna get like that everytime a damn smoking thread starts up in GD. Hell the lounge people get a joke about the fact that people start these things because we all know it's nothing more than a flame war. I mean, if you want a post that'll get 100 responses just start one about smoking - never fails.

So seriously if you'd like to keep seeing the 'sanctimonious, holier than thou' non-smokers then start a thread calling us non-smokers 'sanctimonious, holier than thou'. If anything, it's the smokers that are the real babies. The laws are being passed, if you want to keep your habit then just do it in the privacy of your own home. (and I agree that smoking should never be banned in private home although I would hope those smokers who have children try to go outside away from their kids)

31. I'm going to lock this.
The administrators of Democratic Underground are working to provide a place where progressives can share ideas and debate in an atmosphere of mutual respect. Despite our best efforts, some of our members often stray from this ideal and cheapen the quality of discourse for everyone else. Unfortunately, it is simply impossible to write a comprehensive set of rules forbidding every type of antisocial behavior. The fact that the rules do not forbid a certain type of post does not automatically make an uncivil post appropriate, nor does it imply that the administrators approve of disrespectful behavior. Every member of this community has a responsibility to participate in a respectful manner, and to help foster an atmosphere of houghtful discussion. In this regard, we strongly advise that our members exercise a little common decency, rather than trying to parse the message board rules to figure out what type of antisocial behavior is not forbidden.

Do not post personal attacks or engage in name-calling against other individual members of this discussion board. Even very mild personal attacks are forbidden.

Do not hurl insults at other individual members of this message board. Do not tell someone, "shut up," "screw you," "fuck off," "in your face," or some other insult.

Do not post messages about bodily functions.

Do not post "flame bait" discussion topics. While there is no clear line regarding what constitutes flame bait, the moderators have the authority to shut down threads which they consider too rhetorically hot, too divisive, too extreme, or too inflammatory. Please use good judgment when starting threads; inflammatory rhetoric does not normally lead to productive discussion.

Do not start a new topic in order to continue a flame war from another discussion thread.

best,
